Upcoming Opportunities To Taste

Though next week is big Valentine’s night out, there are a handful of fun events going on this week that will put you in the romantic, celebratory, festive and fun spirit.  Here are a few ideas for this week!

Tonight Grace in Fort Worth hosts a night all about the bubbles with Paul Goerg Premier Cru Champagnes, featuring Paul Goerg’s Ambassador of Champagne, Mario Rinaldi.   The 7 course evening will feature everything from Hawaiian Ahi paired with Paul Georg Blanc de Blanc, to Soft Scrambled Eggs with Truffle and Paul Goerg Absolut Extra-Brut, a perfect combination!  Reservations required, full menu here.

Bolsa Mercado hosts a special “Meet and Eat” Thursday night in celebration of Texas winery, Red Caboose, being named one of the Top 10 Hot Brands of 2012 by Wine Business Monthly.  Wine Business Monthly creates this list each year to celebrate wineries that are innovative, adventurous and tasty.  Bolsa Executive Chef Jeff Harris pairs Red Caboose wines with seasonal dishes like Gulf Coast Red Snapper with mustard greens and horseradish, and Roasted and Braised Cabrito with wines made from Texas grapes.

Starting Saturday through next week you can enjoy a surf and turf dinner for two at Ferrari’s Italian Villa in both Addison and Grapevine for only $99 total!  Owners Jane and Francesco Secchi are two of the most in love owners in town…you can taste their love in the food….especially when their handsome and incredibly talented son, Chef Sefano Secchi, is in charge of the kitchen. You are guaranteed tasty food and an impeccably romantic atmosphere.

And, tomorrow is the start of chocolate week at Central Market with sweet bites available throughout the store for you to enjoy on the spot and pick up to take home to your sweetie.

Upcoming Opportunities To Taste

Though eating lighter and losing weight may be on your New Year’s resolution list, Dallas restaurants haven’t skipped a beat in creating some incredible wine dinners and tasting opportunities that will make you want to splurge just a bit.  Here are some of the tastiest options coming up in the next few weeks.

You never know what inspires a chef, some love foie gras, some love caviar, some love truffle.  It would seem Chef Graham Dodds of Central 214 loves goat, and when cooked well, I have to agree.  Chef Dodds will present a Goat and Beer dinner on January 17 with Windy Hill Organics and Real Ale Brewing Company.  The six course dinner will celebrate the flavors of the whole goat, from the cheeks to the loin to the shoulder to the shank, each paired with Red Ale Brewing Company beers.  The dinner is $70 per person and reservations are required, 214-443-9339.

My doctor always says that getting more fish in the diet is key to a healthy lifestyle, and TJ’s Seafood makes this easier than ever by cooking the fish for you, as well as selling it.  And, they only sell what is fresh and in season.  On January 23 at their new location on Oak Lawn will host a wine dinner with Merriman Winery, featuring their highly rated estate grown Pinot Noir paired with scallops, tuna and salmon dishes. Mike Merriman, owner of Merriman Winery, will be on hand to speak about the wines and pairings. I am a huge red wine with fish fan, and Pinot is one of the best pairings with fish, so this is guaranteed to be a fun and flavorful night.  Reservations required – 214-219-3474. Upcoming Opportunities To Taste

It is a wonderful thing to be a wine lover in Dallas because we never lack for outstanding opportunities to taste something great on any given day, often paired with delicious bites prepared by some of the best chefs around town.  Here are a few opportunities that should not be missed.

Tonight and tomorrow night at Jimmy’s Food Store they welcome two great wine producers from the Campania region of Italy for special tastings of their lush Italian wines. Tonight Maurizo deRosa, Export Manager, of Feudi di San Gregorio will pour selections from their portfolio including their Lacyma Christi, Falanghina, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, called the most noble southern white varietal in Italy.  Tomorrow, Jimmy’s will host Owner and Winemaker of Terradora di Paolo, Lucio Mastroberardino whose family has been making wine for over 130 years!  Lucio is known for combining the traditional with modern advances in his winemaking at his expansive winery in Southern Italy.  Wines to be tasted include Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo, Falanghina, Aglianico, Taurasi and more.  Each tasting will start at 6:30 and each will have a selection of appetizers served as well.  Reservations required – email Paul@jimmysfoodstore.com. Will Central 214 Top Chef Blythe Beck Bottom Out on TV?

central214ashxIs reality TV good for the career of a chef? I don’t watch enough to have an educated opinion but, from where I sit, it looks like more top chefs bottom out after their 15 minutes, or months, of fame. Casey who? Tre what? Lisa Garza is where? Dig what I’m shooting at you?

Next girl up is Central 214’s Blythe Beck. She will star in The Naughty Kitchen With Chef Blythe Beck on Oxygen. I’ve never really understood the naughty kitchen concept. So I checked the shows website. It says:

Blythe Beck, the fiery young chef and star of Oxygen’s upcoming series The Naughty Kitchen With Chef Blythe Beck, shows off her distinctive sexy American cuisine, her cutting edge Dallas restaurant, Central 214, and her loud and flamboyant staff. The Naughty Kitchen With Chef Blythe Beck is certain to cook up the drama both in and out of the kitchen. Oxygen follows executive chef Blythe Beck, a 29-year old Texas native, who is plus-sized in stature and personality, and her colorful crew at Central 214, inside and outside the kitchen as they interact with the Dallas elite and the local university students.

Monday night I went to Central 214 to check it out and write a mini-review. Sadly, I didn’t see waitresses in garter belts or waiters wearing thongs, but I did find the Door Whores. And calories. Lots of calories. What is sexy about calories? I guess we will find out when the show starts on September 22nd. Somebody tell me this is a good thing.

Are You Going To El Paso?

Go hungry.

Quick Lunch Review: The Chocolate Angel In Dallas

pimentoWatch your back, Celebrity Bakery. Here comes The Chocolate Angel. Two sisters, Sherrie McCall and Marcia Clingon, have turned their wholesale fudge operation into four locations of The Chocolate Angel, a bakery, café, and tearoom.

I was shocked to open the door of the location in Preston Forest–the room was full of women. The only men in the space were behind the counter. The menu consists of soups, salads, sandwiches, a quiche of the day, and baked goods. (The Richardson location serves afternoon tea from 3:30-5:30 p.m.) The Chocolate Angel feels a lot like Celebrity Bakery except when you are stand over the cookie case waiting to order, you don’t faint from sticker shock: lemon bars are $1.00, Neiman-Marcus recipe chocolate chip cookies are 85 cents, and cupcakes are $2.75.

JC and I were jonsing for cheese and cheese we did find. She went for the four-cheese sandwich sprinkled with garlic salt and grilled between two thin slices of sourdough. We were so hungry we forgot to ask which four cheeses were melted together. Continue reading "Quick Lunch Review: The Chocolate Angel In Dallas"
