The world is going pig-crazy.
On Friday, I heard that Jack in the Box was offering a very limited number of bacon milkshakes as a secret menu item. Did anyone get a chance to try one? I almost dropped everything to go search for one, but then I remembered my sanity. Now I’m lying deep in the trenches of regret.
Just today through Saturday, all wine currently on the shelves of Jimmy’s Food Store is 20%. No Minimum – No Maximum, but you have to actually go to the store to buy (no calling and requesting wine to be held or ordering.) Grab some Jimmy’s sausage and cheese, or a Cuban sandwich, while you are shopping and you are set to watch a Ranger win tonight!
Attention fellow wine-os and The Brad. Sigel’s Elite (the store at 3209 N. Fitzhugh) is having a ginormus sale. Why? “As a result of the fluid nature of restaurant wine lists and by-the-glass programs, we are from time to time left with wines that have been ordered for restaurants, but not picked up.” Love it. Fluid nature of restaurant wine lists. That’s good. I went to one of these sales a few years ago and scored some $100 wines marked down to $20!. Anywhoo, the fluid nature of the restaurant business is our gain, again. Jump for the list. No phone or email orders.
I have been out of town for the holiday and am just returning to lots of emails, but came across this one and needed to get it out there for Veritas fans looking to relax on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Starting today through Sunday, December 26th Veritas will give a 20% discount on all bottles consumed on premise between 2pm and 6pm. The deal is just on Saturdays and Sundays, but well worth it if you are in need of some weekend dinner wine and would like to have a sip or two before you go. Also, Veritas has big screen TVs usually tuned to Sunday Cowboys’ games.
Jump for more holiday wine specials. (more…)
The Grape has set up shop next door to their Greenville Avenue spot, into the space formerly occupied by Stoney’s, for special wine tastings and events, at least for the holiday season.
Check it out on Tuesday when Courtney Luscher, GM and Sommelier for The Grape, teams with Steve Mansir of Republic Beverage, as they host a “Get Your Grape On” event from 6pm-7:30pm pairing four hand selected wines with The Grape’s classic cheese and charcuterie plate. Reservations required. Call 214-828-1981 for more information. Stick around for mushroom soup and get a discount on your dinner bill.
There is a great reason to eat out at any one of Kent Rathbun’s tasty locations in town. Capital One has teamed with Abacus, Blue Plate Kitchen and Jasper’s Plano to donate up to $15,ooo to The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). Simply order the “Double Rewards Dish” on one of the Rathbun menus from November 11th through the 17th and Capital One will double the cost of the dish and donate that amount to NTFB.
Also, Chef Rathbun has partnered with Dallas photographer Pat Haverfield for the 2011 NTFB calendar featuring recipes and photographs for each month featuring Chef Rathbun’s new line of sauces, Kent Rathbun Elements. On Tuesday the 16th from 6pm-8pm Central Market Dallas will host Chef Rathbun for a cooking demonstration and calendar signing with 100% of the proceeds of the calendar sales going to NTFB. Chef Rathbun will also be at the Plano Central Market on Saturday, December 4th at 10am signing calendars and demonstrating recipes featured in the calendar. 80 meals will be created from each calendar sale.
If you aren’t able to make it out to see the Chef you can still help NTFB, text 85944 on your cell and you can make an easy donation of $10 to the food bank.
Einstein Bros. Bagels in McKinney opening in a big way next Tuesday (Nov. 2) by giving the first 100 people in line coupons for one free breakfast sandwich a week for one year. That’s 52 sandwiches, people. Fine print says that you have to be at least 18 years old, have a valid photo ID, and that the coupons can only be redeemed only at the 7645 Custer Road location, not a big deal if you live nearby — a little more of a hassle if you live in Oak Cliff. But, hey, a free sandwich is a free sandwich.
Looks to me like the store opens at 5:30 am. I’m not saying you should camp out, just that you should plan according to your level of personal commitment.
Love beer and want to try your hand at brewing a batch yourself? It’s not as hard as you might think. Tomorrow’s (Sunday) Homebrewing Workshop from 2-5:30 at Central Market provides an excellent start-up primer while simultaneously giving already-practicing homebrewers an opportunity to ask questions and perfect their craft. As of right now there are 34 seats available; without more registrants the class may not fly, so call or visit Central Market Cooking School’s website to sign up before it’s too late. It’s only $10; what do you have to lose? (The term “workshop” indicates a hands-on component, but it’s unclear from Central Market’s description whether or not we’ll actually be doing any hands-on brewing. Regardless, I’ll be there to catch all the action.)
Stock-up tip: CM is also offering a great Brewtopia discount: 25% off $25 or more on beer and, I believe, beer-related items like homebrewing kits.
I did a post on an incredible Cabernet Sauvignon the other day that I had at Veritas Wine Room. This morning I got an email from co-owner Brooks Anderson on an incredible sale they are doing on this luscious 2006 O’Shaughnessy Howell Mountain Cabernet . This is a great price on on a tasty 2006 Cab. 2006 Napa Cabs are turning out to be some of my favorite – earthy influences layered with cherry, blueberry and nutty flavors with bold aromas and a solid structure.
And don’t you just love a magnum….
Thanks Brooks!
For every 12 bottles of O’Shaughnessy Howell Mountain Cab you purchase, you get a free magnum.I will do the bottles at $67 each plus you get a free magnum.
You’re not 8 years old anymore. You can’t just cut a vaguely flower-shaped hole out of a piece of construction paper, tape it to a piece of cardboard, scribble “Happy Mother’s Day!” across the top, and consider your filial duty fulfilled. Mom really deserves better.
But what can you possibly give this year to assure her that the more than $200,000 she spent on raising you (not counting the money you continued to mooch once you headed off to college), was somehow worth it? Well, look no further than the following commercial announcement:

D Home, which for 10 years has been a great shining beacon among the nation’s “shelter” magazines, is marking its anniversary with an opportunity to give an annual subscription for the special price of $12. That’s six issues (plus the 2010 Design Book) for 60% off the cover price. Heck, buy one for your wife and your grandmother and your sister and crazy aunt Gladys while you’re at it.
From the copy and paste press release department.

August opens to some of the longest, hottest days of summer. Would you love to get out of town, but know it is just not in the cards right now. Would relaxation in the lap of luxury help get through the next month with ease? Then a “staycation” may be just the ticket.
I hate that word, but love the idea of the Summer Escape at The Four Seasons in Las Colinas. I am a huge fan of the Four Seasons (who isn’t,) and love the ability to stay there this summer for a great deal. So much, I had to share. Through September8th the Four Seasons is offering a 2 night stay at $195 per night for 2 people, with 25% off activities and kids 12 and younger dine free. The Four Seasons is one of the most beautiful properties in the area, with the highest level of service and incredible quality.
With additional opportunities to play a round on the same TPC golf course where Tiger and Phil play, complimentary use of the Club’s fitness center, including everything from yoga and Pilates to cardio and weight training equipment and basketball courts. You could even try a game of squash. I am partial to a day relaxing by their massive, lagoon style pool with a tasty beverage followed by a Ginseng facial and aromatherapy massage in the spa…but that is me. Ask for Joe by the pool, he is fantastic. If you have kiddo’s they can also enjoy some special treats. Ask about them when booking your reservation.
Dinner and wine at Café on the Green is a must (including a dessert wine flight that would put our friend, Don Winspear, over the edge) More on that to come…
Our circulation director just told us that our February 2009 issue–the “Cheap Eats” issue–sold like crazy on the newsstand. No big surprise. Everyone wants a bargain these days. And now I just get word that the grand dame of fine Dallas dining is jumping on the bargain bandwagon. Yep, The Mansion is offering a three-course dinner for $49 Sunday-Wednesday. It includes your choice of starter, entree, and dessert. The recession has never tasted so good.
First of all, can anyone believe it’s June? But whatever. I like free–and Potbelly Sandwiches is giving away Zapp’s potato chips at most locations between 11 am-2 pm on Wednesday, June 3. Why? Because it’s a promotion, silly. Apparently Potbelly searched far and wide for the perfect potato match to its sandwich goodness. So there you have it.
I don’t know about you, but I’m kind of grumpy when I don’t get out for lunch. (Sad for my co-workers, yes.) And when I do get out, I sure don’t want to spend a lot. So this news makes me very happy: from 11 am-2 pm, starting May 18, One Arts Plaza is offering “Picnic on the Plaza” lunch deals for less than $9 on the patios of participating restaurants. This means cold fried chicken with pasta salad and a drink from Screen Door for $8, two pork tamales with rice and beans from Jorge’s for $8, or grilled chicken Caesar salad and a bottle of water from Dali for $8.95. Now, let’s just pray for sunshine and a cool breeze.
