The holiday period (including New Year’s Eve!) is traditionally a time for celebrating with sparkling wine. While the first sparkling wine that comes to mind may be Champagne there are plenty of other types of sparkling wine. Some are produced by the same methods as Champagne but others are not and are worthy and less expensive. Below I have put together some alternatives to Champagne from a batch of bottles that have been sent to D Headquarters for review. I’ve included approximate prices. The opinions are mine. Go.

2 Comments »OK, sure, they’re everywhere. But ubiquity doesn’t disqualify La Madeleine from easing my burden this holiday season. The chain’s patisserie (French bakery) is turning out a broad enough variety of Viennoisere (Viennese yummies) and assorted hostess/office/family-worthy gifts to solve every potential holiday dilemma I tend to encounter.

I went to The Second Floor a couple of weeks ago to test out the newest cocktail on the Molecular Mixology list: the Pumpkin Vanilla Martini. I’d like to start this little recap off with my conclusion: I think The Second Floor is a little gem lost among the Oceanaire and The Grill on the Alley giants at the Galleria. I’m no food snob, but I do love to eat, I am a little finicky, and I can tell you I enjoyed everything served. The martini was beyond delicious. The pumpkin concoction was served with a sprinkling of cinnamon for spice, a dollop of frozen Godiva white chocolate liqueur (which is created in front of you at the bar), and a side of candied cranberries. An invitation to try a smattering of dishes was welcome, and everything from the flatbread to the house-made potato gnocchi was tasty. Jump for details.

For the 12 days leading up to Christmas (December 13 to 24), the Uptown location of Urban Taco will be showcasing a different, rib-sticking tamale recipe each and every day. Keep your shopping energy high with pollo con mole on the 13th, rajas con queso on the 15th, and barbacoa con chorizo on the 20th. (Is it our imaginations, or do the recipes seem to get heartier the closer we get to zero hour on the 24th?)
Our suggestion: grab them by the dozen ($25), freeze, then defrost for Christmas brunch or that New Year’s Day hangover. Yes, definitely for that New Year’s Day hangover.

We sent intern Valeria Turturro out to learn about the various wines the holiday season has to offer. Read her report below.
“Oh the weather outside is frightful…” Okay, it’s not quite frightful yet, but a girl can dream. And walking into the Hotel Palomar yesterday on an unusually chilly Dallas night was a surefire way to get into the holiday spirit. The warmly lit lobby was the perfect welcome to the “Wines for the Season” wine and food event inside Central 214. Guests gave donations to benefit Resource Center Dallas and the fight against HIV and in exchange got to sip and taste nine wines perfectly paired to their chef-prepared hors d’oeuvres. Central 214’s celebrity chef Blythe Beck, known as “the Naughty Chef,” created a menu to complement a list of wines put together by Kimpton’s master sommelier Emily Wines.

He’s packing up the family and heading to Santa Fe. Ho, ho, ho, Santa Fe for Santa Claus at Christmas. Tell him where to go.
20 Comments »Any chance you can ask your well traveled readers if they know of a place for Christmas dinner in Santa Fe? There’s always loads of people from Dallas up there so I reckon there might be some suggestions. We don’t care if it’s homey or fancy, just keep it local (i.e. no Asian etc

Steven “Dallas Dude” Doyle stunned the foodie world today by posting this shocking news on his FB page:
I resigned from The Dallas Observer and now full time at the Critic’s Guide that will premiere Monday morning.
The Critic’s Guide is the brainchild of Dave Faries, another dude who quit the Observer. Faries and Doyle will be joined by Mark Stuertz, yet another dude who quit the Observer. Why didn’t Dave just call it Food By Dudes? Critic’s Guide debuts on Monday. I FREAKIN’ CAN’T WAIT.

Christmas dinner can include so many different flavors. Whether you opt to enjoy a beef tenderloin, glazed ham, roast turkey, smoked salmon, homemade pasta or tamales and chili, there are tasty wine and spirit options that can make the season that much better.
To start, I tried a tasty holiday cocktail at the Dragonfly in the Hotel ZaZa the other night. Creamy, minty good, the Feliz Navi-Za is sure to become a new cocktail tradition.
Feliz Navi-Za:
1oz. Grey Goose Vodka
.25 oz. crème de cacao
.25 oz. crème de menthe white
.5 oz. Godiva white chocolate liqueur
Crushed peppermint rim
Lined martini glass with raspberry sauce Continue reading "What I’m Drinking Now: Christmas Celebrations"
14 Comments »Why am I having such an impossible time thinking of an intimate restaurant, north of LBJ that my husband and I can have a quiet, little pre-Christmas meal tonight without completely breaking the bank? Truthfully, I can’t even think of an intimate place if it would break the bank. Any ideas?
