We’ve all been waiting forever for The Joule Hotel finish its renovations, and now we can almost taste the day when we won’t see ugly construction barring us from our downtown gem. The new Joule has expanded its lobby to provide entrances from Commerce and Main streets. If you enter from Main, you’ll spot a familiar front desk in the lobby entrance, but look ahead past the bar and elevators, and you’ll see a welcoming addition: Weekend Coffee.
Weekend Coffee is a bright and cheery coffee shop, brought to you by TenOverSix people, with friendly baristas and servers that open its doors to the public tomorrow (Wednesday).
Chiladas, a family owned company, officially opens its second location today on Lovers Ln. The first is located in Plano at 6145 Windhaven Pkwy.
Owners Night Keyes (with Williamson Family Investments) and Katie Day greeted customers and media members at a preview yesterday, and encouraged them to try everything on the menu as they stepped up to the counter to order. I was invited as a guest.
Keyes and Day said they chose this location in order to appeal to the surrounding neighborhood. Located right off the Dallas North Tollway, the colorful and inviting patio is sure to draw in customers from the high traffic area.9 Comments »
You may recall back in 1989 the muscly, taut action/drama, Roadhouse. It caused the nation to swoon and wrestled in a new era of gritty/bar brawling/martial arts/tai chi/poignant sprawling epics that flooded theaters the following years. It was an exciting time to breathe and an even more exciting time to be a Hulk Hogan-loving 6-year-old, fresh out kindergarten in Missouri. My interest in Marxist/Morrison philosophy has swayed to some exponential degree, but my love and Swayze-induced hot sweats have endured and even strengthened. While the new Lakewood restaurant, The Lot, doesn’t possess the threat of a rib stabbing or a powerful roundhouse boot kick from a brutally apt martial arts henchman, it does appeal to our American Roadhouse desires and hopefully beckons to the late Mr. Swayze’s iconic “Dalton” and his passion for a friendly, lively and safe roadhouse gathering.
The Lot, which opened this Monday, has covered a great deal of space with its robust remodeling of the old Backyard Beach Bar. Its countrified barn house appeal is friendly and welcoming. There are two playgrounds (one for kids and one for adults), an outdoor stage, and an outdoor bar that will serve burgers, Hoffman hots, tacos and beers. Plenty of communal picnic tables are there for you to rest your bum while you indulge in the sights, sounds and tastes that surround you. I normally avoid the kid zoos that call themselves restaurants, but this place was surprisingly tempered thanks to the playground and the well-designed acoustics of the interior. The bar area is separated from the main dining hall by glass garage doors, which helps maintain its adult-necessary privacy.
Just off the phone with Nick Badovinus who tells me he is unlocking the doors in about an hour and a half for a private showing of his newest creation, Tried and True. “It’s a cool little bar with a heavy American spirit menu,” Badovinus says. Huh? I’ll translate.
Bourbon and whiskey are the stars at the bar. No fancy craft cocktails; not a mixologist on site. “It’s a heavy American whiskey focus and I’m doing lots of charcuterie with aged hams imported from Meacham Country (Sturgis, KY) and Benton’s Smoky Mountain (Tennessee),” Badovinus says. “Call it an all-American ham program.”
The bar will offer four beers: Peticolas, Deep Ellum, Lakewood Brewing Co., and Boulevard are on the opening rotation.
The menu will feature burgers, sandwiches, bar steaks, a taco program, and little apps such as brisket nachos and fried zucchini. In a few weeks he’ll add a red-eye menu which will basically be breakfast for dinner served until closing. The dude in the kitchen is Johnny “Lady Killer’ Miller who has been with Badovinus for a few years and was instrumental in getting the Neighborhood Services open at Preston Royal.
The interior is “dark and lived in” like a juke joint with a pool table. Two café racer motorcycles hang on the walls. “They are an addiction I have to shake,” Badovinus says. “I’ve got my sons first two years of college on the walls here.”

There is rarely a time when it is common to see a group of people congregated outside of a grocery store at the brink of dawn…that is unless a Trader Joe’s is opening in your neighborhood. Actually, it doesn’t necessarily even have to be in your neighborhood, as residents from Duncanville, Denison, Ellis, and Allen will attest while they stand in line at the opening of the new store in Plano.
There is an energy brewing amongst the excited patrons that feels celebratory and relieved at the same time. The store is decorated outside with balloons and employees can be seen inside setting up for the opening, dressed in their classic Hawaiin print shirts. Carts are lined up to perfection and ready, the grand opening banner is being put up, and it’s just a matter of hours before opening.19 Comments »
Houston-based Max’s Wine Dive is getting ready to open in the old Border’s building on McKinney Avenue in mid-September. The Houston-based mini-chain has restaurants in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. It sounds like a good idea for the times: good wine and low prices paired with easy-to-eat-and-pay-for food. There Their slogan is fried chicken and Champagne which works for me. Last night I was shocked to find Paul Pinnell’s mugshot on Max’s Facebook page. They’ve hired him to be their General Manager. Pinnell was last seen locking the doors to his tony spot Dali Wine Bar in One Arts Plaza. He disappeared from Dallas and moved to New Orleans where he worked at The Rib Room. I’ve sent an email to catch up with the talented and dapper wine buff who once ruled the roost at Nana. Welcome back, Paul. Now pop open the Champagne and that restaurant.6 Comments »
Follow the lines and sweet aroma of klassic kettle in Town East Mall, and you’ll find the recently opened Doc Popcorn in Mesquite. This new shop is the sixth location in Texas for Doc Popcorn, the world’s first all-natural popcorn.
“Remember when you were a kid and the first thing you smelled in a theater was the popcorn? That’s what this is,” Mesquite’s Doc Popcorn owner Bobby Tibbs said. “It’s a sense of nostalgia, an aroma that goes through the whole mall. If we pop it, people will come and get a bag.”
Doc Popcorn has a prescription for nine flavors: sweet butter, klassic kettle, cheesy cheddar, better butter, triple white cheddar, salt-n-pepper, caramel kettle, hoppin’ jalapeno, and sinfully cinnamon. A small bag costs $3.50, but you can get a large bag for 50 cents more. Tins and party bags are also available, starting at $15.
“We use all natural flavors, no artificial coloring, real butter, real carmel,” Tibbs said. “And you can mix flavors. We had some people in from Chicago who showed us how to make Chicago-style by mixing cinnamon and carmel.”

This Thursday, eatZi’s is opening its third location along West State Hwy 114. Phil Romano’s gourmet market and bakery is expanding its chain just north of Dallas where suburbanites can also get a taste of simple comfort foods made fresh daily.
At the eatZi’s preview night yesterday, the new store swung its doors open for some local shoppers. Its storefront, which had previously been plastered with a Luby’s Cafeteria sign, looked like a carbon copy of the Oak Lawn location. The inside is also exactly the same as the other two locations, with a few exceptions. “What we did was we took the best of both stores and combined them,” says Elis Droubi, the General Manager. A coffee bar greets you in front because eatZi planners noticed that it did well there in the Lovers store, and salads and sandwiches have a big presence at the Grapevine store.

The co-owners of Nosh Euro Bistro, Avner Samuel and Jon Stevens, are going out of their New American comfort zone and opening a restaurant that’ll feature cuisine from Thailand, India, the Middle East, Mexico, and more. SNACK Global Kitchen & Bar is taking over the former Horne & Dekker spot on 2323 N. Henderson Avenue and gutting it to create three different bar areas – one with cocktails, wine, and beer; the second will serve small hot plates; and the third “will feature a large wood-burning oven for made-to-order flatbreads and distinct hot dishes cooked in various vessels over the fire (40 seats total for all three drink and food bar areas).”
“SNACK will feature small plates with recipes from around the globe. The cocktails, wine and beer list will reflect and complement the globally influenced menu, while at the same time remaining at a low price per ticket average.” The menu will change frequently and two large blackboards, (5 ’x 8’) against the sidewalls of the restaurant,” says Samuel, “Whatever the market will bear that day will be on the menu.”
This joint is open nightly seven days a week and will provide brunch service on Saturdays and Sundays. The Kitchen is open until midnight, while the bar closes at 2 AM.
Everyone in Los Cabos (and even those who aren’t) will tell you that you must try Manuel’s Creative Cuisine, a restaurant located along the Sea of Cortez. Now chef and owner Manuel Arrendondo uses his 30 years of experience in the kitchen to open his first location in Dallas along Cedar Springs Road. These windows don’t look out to calming sea waters, but the minimalistic style and gastronomic experience at his Dallas location is much the same.

It’s no secret that I avoid fried chicken like a bad disease. Something about fried chicken makes me want to look, sniff, and throw it back inside the KFC container it came in. Yet Sissy’s fried chicken is something else entirely. Paired with a fresh housemade Sriracha sauce, this Lisa Garza special has that hard-to-find balance you seek in any good ‘ole piece of Southern fried chicken: crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.
At the media lunch I attended last week, I split a family-style meal with three other persons, and it took no small amount of self control to remember my table manners and share the amazing plates provided by Sissy’s Southern Kitchen and Bar.

The old Place at Perry’s (from what I’ve heard) was dark and stuffy. No windows. No light. After three months of shutting down its entire operation, the Place at Perry’s has now reopened in a new location at 2680 Cedar Springs Road. Same owner, same chef Jaime Corona, but a completely new staff and vibe. The new building is swanky, hip, and modern. And it’s definitely worth checking out.

The Palindrome (pronounced oh-ka-taco) by Maple and Motor’s Jack Perkins officially opened last Thursday for lunch. Even though the menu is short, it’s good for people like me who can’t really decide what to order. Three meat options – tender brisket, pulled pork, and chicken – are plenty enough, thank you. And, of course, I’ll take mine with a side order of chips and salsa.

“Dallas, don’t be surprised if you see a Moose driving down the highway or floating in the sky. Dallas will have its share of “Moose sightings” this month due to the Grand Opening of Dallas’ first Smiling Moose Deli location in West Plano at Hebron Parkway/Park Boulevard, one block west of Midway. The Colorado based company will be one of Dallas’ hippest new delis providing patrons with breakfast, lunch and dinner selections, hearty portions and fresh ingredients far superior than their competitors…all served in a warm, (sic) décor with hints of both Colorado and Texas, as seen by (sic) their ski, snowboard and professional sports collections.
Grand Opening Day is this Thursday, September 15th from 8:00 am – 9:00 pm. Festivities will begin when Mo the Moose (the official mascot of Smiling Moose Deli) arrives as Dallas’ newest resident by air in a giant 6 story tall hot air balloon.

Hunk on the range, Tim Love, is poised to open Woodshed Smokehouse over near the zoo in Fort Worth. Bud Kennedy over at The Star Telegram has the skinny.

Downtown’s pretty exciting right now. First, Dirt opened on Monday (adorable store, go visit). Then, last night, Wild Salsa opened. And, according to a conversation I had with the manager at Pho Colonial, their downtown location will open in two weeks.
My husband and I have been watching Wild Salsa be built for the past few months, so we decided that even if there was a wait, we were going to try it out. Turns out, there was no wait.
The exterior of the place confused me. Someone said the sign looks like it belongs to a tattoo parlor. I agree. And then they put up a big Day of the Dead mural next to the gorgeous doors. So I was a bit more confused. To the right of all that, you can see into the kitchen. And you can also see that the windows are to be opened. That’s because they’re going to serve tacos from those windows and have seating available outside (and dog treats for those with furry friends).
Okay. So they’re starting to win me over.
Word on the street is that the Deep Ellum/Commerce St. location of Cowboy Chow is being taken over by D’s Best Breakfast favorite, Buzzbrews. In fact, this weekend is the Chow’s last one in that location. Look for Buzzbrews to start slinging their hash to downtown brunchers, the 2 am Adair’s crowd, and hungover hipsters sometime in July.
