California’s Jordan Vineyard & Winery created the 4on4 Dallas Art Competition in order to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Local artists rose to the challenge of blending Jordan Wines with Dallas’ distinct city flavor, and their pieces will be judged at an art exhibition/wine tasting event on Tuesday, April 24th at RISING Gallery from 6 to 9 PM. The expert judges include Chef Kent Rathbun and our very own FrontRow arts editor Peter Simek. (D is hosting the event.)
4on4 event is free and open to the public, but you should still RSVP here.
It was bound to happen: pizza lover and baseball writer, Evan Grant, finally met pizza maker and baseball lover, Jay Jerrier. The twosome came up with a publicity stunt. (SHOCKER) They invented “Name a Pizza for Mike Napoli” contest. (If you don’t know who Napoli is, you can go back to work.) If you love the catcher-first-baseman-DH lovingly referred to as “Dirtbag,” you will love this: Today, Grant and Jerrier announced four finalists plus Grant’s unofficial “look-how-funny-I-am”entry, “The (he wishes) Grand Salami.” Hear him brag:
After much consideration, pizza-maker extraordinaire Jay Jerrier and pizza-eater extraordinaire Evan Grant (that’s me), have come up with four finalists for our Name a Napoli Pizza contest.Tuesday (Feb. 7 or tomorrow to most of you), we will roll out some samples of these fine entries for you to taste and, as always, the full Cane Rosso menu will be available. One of these fine recipes will end up as a special pie on the Cane Rosso menu for the next month and one of these neophyte pizza creators will walk away with a nice little prize package. Maybe we can come up with some other surprises, too. So, if you are free come on down. We’d love your input here and at the restaurant. Here are the finalists. Be there at 7PM.
It’s National Froyo Day, which means you can get FREE frozen yogurt at any Yogurtland location between the hours of 4 and 7 pm today. I’m only posting this in case there are any weirdos out there obsessed with Yogurtland’s spoons. Yogurtland is giving out special edition collector spoons and cups that would look great in my, uh, growing collection.

Nammi and The Butcher’s Son have teamed up and are serving FREE food today at FairLease, Inc., an automotive leasing company. The two food trucks have been teasing us with this special surprise for several days now and asked us to hold the information until the event starts at 11AM. But they just tweeted it so we’re posting!
Want some free food? FairLease is at 8131 LBJ Freeway, Dallas, TX 75251, near the I-635 and 75 High Five exchange. All you Texas Instruments employees, line ‘em up.
The event is part of Fairlease’s Random Acts of Fairness program. What a great spirit!
Raise your hand if you’ve ever tasted kulfi, the ice cream of the Indian subcontinent made with only pure cooked milk, cane sugar, and natural flavors. It’s decadent; it’s intense; it’s lower in calories, sugar, and fat than similar ice creams. Sold yet?
If you’re still unsure, swing by the Dallas Farmers Market between 10:30 and 4:30 on Sept. 11 when Dallas’ own Kaurina’s, local manufacturer of authentic Indian kulfi and exotic ice creams, will partner with the Cooking Channel’s Frozen Treat Truck tour stop to hand out free samples of Kaurina’s 80 calorie Kulfi bars.
A bit on Kaurina’s:
Kaurina’s started when, co-founder, Mrs. Jas Singh began making kulfi from an original family recipe for family and friends. Kaurina’s stays true to tradition by using only pure, simple and all natural ingredients, with no eggs or preservatives. Today Kaurina’s supplies their delicious Kulfis to all major ethnic Indian and South Asian grocers throughout Texas as well as Market Street in DFW, and coming soon to Central Markets.
“We were excited to taste these all-natural kulfi pops by Kaurina’s, a small company in Texas,” said Merritt Watts, senior editor at Everyday Food for marthastewart.com. “They were rich yet refreshing and had the perfect creamy texture.”
“We want to offer Kaurina’s Kulfi as a healthier alternative to traditional ice cream. With fewer calories, sugar, and fat, you can savor the flavor without the guilt,” said Aman Singh, VP of Kaurina’s. “Kulfi has been enjoyed for generations overseas, and Kaurina’s wants to introduce that tradition of enjoying authentic Kulfi to the West.”

The Dole Fruit Truck will hand out fruit cups at Main Street garden tomorrow and Wednesday. (Image courtesy of Dole.)
Tomorrow from 11 am to 6 pm, Dole will have a truck parked Downtown at Main Street Garden Park (Main St. at Saint Paul), giving away fruit bowls to raise awareness about nutrition and domestic hunger issues.
Dole will donate one cup of DOLE All Natural Fruit in 100% juice to the North Texas Food Bank and the Tarrant Area Food Bank for every person who visits the fruit stand in person and an additional bonus cup for every Facebook “check in” on-site. Additionally, consumers can participate on Dole’s Facebook page, with the ultimate goal of sharing 250,000 cups with kids in need.

Monday night our photographer Desiree Espada dropped by John Tesar’s inaugural dinner at The Table, the 12 8-seat tasting room next to The Commissary. The table was lined with friends including Jennifer and David Uygur (Lucia), Chef Bruno Davaillon (Mansion execuchef), Michael Flynn (Mansion sommelier), Tim Byres (Smoke), Teiichi “Teach” Sakurai (Tei-An), and The “Ubiquitous” Brad. Sarah Reiss from our staff was also invited. Here are the pictures Desiree managed to capture.
Intrepid intern Katie Minchew ran away with the circus—for the afternoon. Read up on her adventures with the elephants at the Dallas Farmers Market:
The Shrine Circus is in town at Fair Park Coliseum until Sunday.
Yesterday, despite the unseasonably chilly weather, three of the show’s Asian elephants—Cindy, Betty, and Bo—presented a little side show at the Dallas Farmers Market where the public was invited to “lunch with the elephants.” Cindy and Betty worked up their appetite giving the kids (and policemen) rides around the ring while Bo lounged behind the scenes awaiting the feast of fruit supplied by the Dallas Farmers Market.
Larry Carden, son of the George Carden of George Carden Circus International, talked me through the feeding of these magnificent pachyderms. They eat 150 squares of hay per week, one thousand dollars of produce each week, and 20 bags of feed every day. They don’t usually get this much produce at a time so “this fruit table will be a treat for them,” said Carden.

There’s one four letter word (besides pony, cake, swag, and, of course, doob) that brings us running—and that word is FREE. Especially when it refers to food. Screen Door at One Arts Plaza knows our dirty little secret and feeds our need on Monday, April 4 from 5 to 8 p.m. when diners will have the first opportunity to try two off-the-menu dishes for free.
This month, you can select two complimentary plates from the following options:
As you’d guess, you’re not getting near the place without a reservation, and group reservations are limited to six people, so don’t try using this as a cheap way to host your rehearsal dinner. Call 214-720-9111 to reserve your spot.
Break out the Lipitor and wade into the cheese-loving throngs at Norma’s on April 12 for National Grilled Cheese Day, when guests will receive one free grilled cheese sandwich on the house. While you’re at it, be a mensch and pony up for a bowl of Norma’s homemade soup to go with it. Get there early; I anticipate a crowd.
Who knew there was a National Pie Day? Apparently, Norma’s Cafe did because on Friday (Jan. 21) they’re celebrating it by giving everyone a free slice of pie with the purchase of an entree. Think of the mile high cream pie, the crispy crusted, gooey centered pies with meringue you could stucco a house with. Coconut cream, chocolate, lemon, peanut butter-chocolate. C’mon, you know you want it. Be warned: once the pie runs out, that’s that. So get down there while the getting’s good. And let us know if you go. We’d love to hear all about it.
It’s Maredsous Chalice Night at The Old Monk. Be one of the first 150 folks to order a Maredsous 6 or 8 and receive a free ceramic Maredsous chalice. Yours to keep. Really. We promise.
Locally owned and operated Paciugo Gelato & Caffè is making our stomachs howl in anticipation of its five new holiday flavors:
Chocolate Cocoa Nibs gelato—a dark chocolate gelato with crunchy bits of Venezuelan cocoa nibs that add texture and a slightly bitter, smoky, roasted flavor.
Dulce de Leche Peppermint Swirl gelato—a combination of Dulce de Leche gelato swirled with Dulce de Leche & Peppermint sauce, dark chocolate pieces and a milk caramel and mint twist to tone down the pungent notes of peppermint without losing the intensity of the flavor.
Lemon Custard Fig Ginger Swirl gelato—a traditional Italian gelato recipe made with creamy custard gelato paired with a sauce made with golden fig, Paciugo Gelato & Caffè’s signature candied ginger and fresh lemon peels.
Limoncello gelato—infused with an Italian liquor that is made from fresh lemon peels, which are stored in a sealed glass container with alcohol and sugar until aged just right.
Red Velvet Cake —a quintessential combo that pairs the creaminess of vanilla with an American dessert favorite sure to please the taste buds this holiday season.
Bonus: purchase $20 in gift cards and receive a free Piccolo Cup of gelato.
We love a freebie, and this one’s a no-brainer. The Uptown location of Urban Taco is so jazzed about being named one of D’s best new restaurants, that they want to pay it forward by treating anyone bringing in a December 2010 issue of D Magazine to a free Apple Cider Spiked Punch or a Hot Cocoa-Quilla every Tuesday throughout the month of December.
(Uptown location only. Actual drink may or may not look like the picture above.)

Dallas-based Yumilicious (an off-the-record fave among the D editorial crew) is gearing up to give away free fro yo in Snider Plaza from 5 to 9 pm on Dec. 10 to celebrate the grand opening of its 8th location. Show up for your share of the low-fat treats, as well as raffle drawings, and the possibility of a chance encounter with hostess (and Dallas’ own Project Runway designer) Shirin Askari. (We’re not sure how many flavors will be available on the day of the opening, but, ultimately, the location will serve 16 flavors from avocado to red velvet and 40+ toppings.)
The raffle prizes don’t stink either: a 32GB iPad plus 3G, two tickets to Shirin Askari’s fashion show, one free yogurt per week for a year, 100 t-shirts, gift cards, and more. Work off the few calories you’ve taken in by grooving to tunes provided by DJ Tek-Neek.
The deals continue throughout the weekend: on Saturday, December 11 and Sunday, December 12 guests will receive 20% off all day and have another chance to win the 32GB iPad+3G.
Einstein Bros. Bagels in McKinney opening in a big way next Tuesday (Nov. 2) by giving the first 100 people in line coupons for one free breakfast sandwich a week for one year. That’s 52 sandwiches, people. Fine print says that you have to be at least 18 years old, have a valid photo ID, and that the coupons can only be redeemed only at the 7645 Custer Road location, not a big deal if you live nearby — a little more of a hassle if you live in Oak Cliff. But, hey, a free sandwich is a free sandwich.
Looks to me like the store opens at 5:30 am. I’m not saying you should camp out, just that you should plan according to your level of personal commitment.
