Bits & Bites: Dallas Food & Booze Events August 22-24

Okay, so here’s the deal. Saturday is stepping up its game this weekend and needs you to rise to the occasion. I would advise a casual Friday night along with a recovery Sunday, but hey, we live in Dallas, and like all Texans say, we do it BIG here. Put your big kid pants on and live it up, because come Monday you’ll have some great stories to tell, and maybe a slight hangover.

Friday, August 22nd

Gather your troop of friends or make buddies with the group beside you as things get communal over at Cook Hall for another monthly beer dinner featuring Lakewood Brewing. Starting at 7 pm, you’ll get the chance to chow down on plates like Truffle toast with goat cheese and prosciutto, black bass and carrot confit, chili-glazed pork chops and tiramisu with coffee jelly and mascarpone cream. Learn the magic behind the different brews from Lakewood as the company and Cook Hall’s chef walk guests through each of the five courses. Saturday August 23rd

The 2nd Annual SausageFest is this weekend, and apparently it’s not a gathering of the fratty guys around town, but a celebration of encased swine and adult frosties. Bounce around from meaty games like sausage bobbing, sausage races, and sausage toss before heading to the 2014 Miss Sausage Pageant with what they call an “obligatory” bikini contest. From 4 pm to 7 pm, enjoy what the different vendors have to offer along with music and of course endless beer. General admission tickets run for $15.

I like my Saturday mornings with a cup of coffee and a side of carbs and gluttony. Get that at Empire Baking Company’s Lovers Lane location from 10 am to 2 pm as they host their second Pop-Up Celebrity Pastry Chef Bake Sale benefitting Duck Team 6. Laurel Wimberg, pastry chef of Consilient Hospitality will roll out some of her acclaimed treats and chat with customers as they revel in sugar bliss.

If you haven’t seen the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos flooding social media then you must not have any friends or maybe your Internet and cable are just out. Let’s go with the latter. Jump on the bandwagon with the folks of Rabbit Hole Brewing as they offer to dump ice on anyone who wants to participate. It’s free for you but of course you should consider pitching in donation money to the cause. For every wet person, Rabbit Hole will donate $5.

The Design District Market will take place from noon to 8 pm at the Dallas Contemporary with a little something for everyone. The unique indoor and outdoor summer event not only celebrates the Design District’s community of local businesses, artists, and artisans, but also highlights shops from all around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Get there as temperatures start to peak and you can cool off from the Texas summer heat in the Progressive Waste Solutions customized “Dumpster Pool.”

Sunday August 24th

Fall is right around the corner, and Dallas Beer Kitchen seems a little anxious to get the ball rolling with autumn-themed munchies. I hold a special place in my heart for all things fall, so I send my thanks to their staff. Head down Greenville to check out sensations like a rotating beer ice cream menu. I have my eye on the Blood and Honeysicle made with creamy ice cream, blood orange zest, honey, and you guessed it – Revolver Blood & Honey. I would like a gallon or two of that to go, please.
