What We’re Reading: Truffles & Brancoladas

How about a coffee break? Go on. Read a bit. Here are a few links we’re looking at.

FT33 recently did a truffle dinner, and I was pretty bummed about not being able to go. I love truffles. Admittedly, I know nothing about them, but this Bon Appétit story about truffles came out this morning and I’m feeling much better about the basics now. The business is getting jostled by farmed truffles of all kinds, and there are impostors on the scene. Read more here.

Alice Laussade’s (quite) irreverent Cheap Bastard’s Vegetarian Guide to Being a Vegetarian Bastard In Dallas. She ate a vegetarian diet for 30 days and checked out restaurants around town to see who had the best veggie menus.

So if you happen to be at a local Whole Foods this Sunday and see protesters, do not be alarmed. Activists are passing out flyers at some locations around the country on the 17th to advocate for rabbits. Whole Foods has started selling rabbit meat in a few markets as a result of customer demand, but lots of folks aren’t too keen on seeing their little furry pets in meat trays (apparently they are the third most popular pet). It doesn’t look like Dallas has an organized protest, but there are printable flyers on the Day of Action webpage, so you never know what might happen.

I had never heard of Branca Menta before, but I’m positive that I need to try it now. This recipe for a Brancolada from a Brooklyn bar sounds fantastic. It’s a creamy piña colada with an added 4 ounces of Branca Menta, an herbal Italian mint liqueur. This is happening.
