Making Dallas Even Better

Oh, holy horrors. I heard a rumor yesterday that the Herrera family had backed out of the deal they considered for a new location of Herrera’s Cafe on Maple Avenue. This morning, Timmy links to Karen Robinson-Jacobs’ DMN story that confirms the reality. After 40 years on Maple, the family can’t afford to stay there. The area near the Old Parkland Hospital is under construction that included a 4,500-square-foot restaurant with a patio for a new Herrera’s. Their current location (4024 Maple Ave.) across the street from the new site is scheduled to be demolished.  Jacobs quotes Nora Ontiveros, whose family owns the restaurant: “We’re not owned by investors,” said Ontiveros. “We’re just a mom and pop. We can’t afford to stay here.” They are looking for another location.

I’m all for progress. I love the fact that the Old Parkland Hospital has been restored, however, I am horrified that Crow Holdings would scrub culinary history off Maple Avenue. Escondido’s, Rosita’s, Herrera’s gone from Maple Avenue? It’s a dark day. Raise your Menudo for Breakfast flags.

Now if they’ll only demolish The Grapevine!

I love THIS Herrera’s. The one in Mockingbird Station, who is apparently a distant relative taking advantage of the name, is terrible. I work in near MB Station and I will drive to Maple location instead of suffering through that place. This original Herrera’s has the best chicken soup in Dallas on Fridays at lunch. The beef version on Mondays is also excellent. Been trading with these fine people since it was at the old location that is now the Grapevine. Other stand out dishes include all the breakfast options, the cheese enchiladas and their guac is some of the best in the city. My vote for best chips and hot sauce too. I hope they get settled in some place fast. If I were them I call the new place “The Original Herrera’s Cafe”.

Agree with Steve. I really like this location too. I miss Escondido’s and Rosita’s. The food here is just good ol’ family tex mex. I was hoping the MS location was going to be good, but I visited right after they opened and again about a month ago. I can’t believe they are still open.

I also love Mia’s but really dislike the way Mi Cocina has become just another chain restaurant and stepped away from the great family customer service after Mico left.

I hope this Herrera’s finds a new home.

I hope Mr. Crow will see the support from the out pouring of people and reconstruct the deal where they (Herrere’s) would not have to pay all the tax so they can s they can stay on Maple. They Are A Land Mark just as the old Parkland. Even news stations like Nbc 5 and Fox 4 have picked up the story. I wonder what Mr. Crow seen all this and if so what is he thinks? I’m all for business, but money isn’t enough everything.

I thought they were building a new structure across the street from their present location. If they can’t move in there, there are plenty of other vacant storefronts along that stretch of Maple. Here’s hoping they find something they can afford.

Mr. Crow doesn’t care. All he cares about is what makes money for him.

No, Avila’s sucks, no matter what TV Guy says. Maybe they should close so Herrera’s could get that building.
