Food Feedback Friday

Did you get out to dine this week? Discover anything new and exciting or perchance have a dreadful dinner? We’d love to hear the good, bad, and the ugly. Last week, you ate like good little piggies at Terra,  Mi Dia,  Shinjuku Station, Melt Ice Creams, AF+B, Royal China, The Grape, Meddlesome Moth, Brewed, Magnolia Ave’s Paris Coffee Shop, Emporium Pies, Stock & Barrel, and St. Martins French Bistro.

  1. We tried Pluckers for the first time and were disappointed. Even my kids, who aren’t food snobs, refused to eat some of the items because they were far short of delicious.

  2. I must concur. We were also very disappointed with Plucker’s. We actually never even finished our plates.

  3. Only have good things to say about Underground Indian Cuisine in Las Colinas and Thai Papaya Garden in Euless. Underground’s dum pukht curries are the thing to get – I haven’t had all of them but every single one I’ve had so far exemplifies the benefits of slow cooking. Had the oudhi qurma, which was very good, especially if you like the combo of lamb and a nutty (literally it has cashews in it, I think) curry. The vegetarian entrees are not an afterthought – the chole will light your mouth on fire. And they have the best biryanis in the city – rich without being oily/greasy and loaded with meat and herbs. One tip – skip the rice, and ask for the naan.

    As for Papaya Garden, it’s hidden on Industrial Blvd right off of 183, and features some of the best Thai stir-fry I’ve had in Texas. I heartily recommend the garlic and peppers stir fry with shrimp – perfect combo of sweet, umami and spicy. The soups and curries are also great and tasty. Lucky people in the mid cities, I believe they deliver to you now…

  4. Last weekend we joined a few friends for a little North Texas road trip to Brushy Creek Winery in Alvord, TX, followed by dinner at Gogo Gumbo in Boyd. Brushy Creek offers a selection of medal-winning wines (we especially enjoyed a 2010 Tempranillo as well as a 2010 Rousanne. After a light picnic on the deck of the tasting room, we traveled on to Gogo Gumbo. Chef Kraig Thome turned a former catfish joint (that he found on Craigslist) into a BYOB fine dining find. It opens at 4pm, and on a Saturday, the line was out the door by 5:00. Well worth the wait–we enjoyed nightly specials of a Lobster Bento Box (lobster bisque, crab stuffed lobster tail, lobster/crab cake, lobster mac n cheese and lobster pot pie) and a pork steak with gnocchi. House made desserts included a bourbon chocolate mousse pie, bread pudding and banana cream pie. We met the grandmother of the pastry chef, who was beaming with pride as we praised the desserts. Well worth the drive–and a good reason to raid the wine cellar and break out the good glasses.
