  1. Enjoyed St Martins French Bistro this week; always a favorite but we often don’t think of it. The piano playing in the background is a great treat not available in many spots around town, and the kitchen is doing a great job with each entrée being delicious and finely presented. We had classic champagne brie soup, soufflé, beet salad, and the duckling, ahi tuna, lemon sole, and veal dish at our table.

  2. Stock & Barrel last night before a show at the Kessler. Excellent service, cool interior, outstanding food. The Waygu Beef Meatloaf, Pork Schnitzel, Branzino and Gnocchi dishes were all superb. Flavors are deep with some great spikes of acid here and there to keep the palate intrigued. Great to see the place full on a Thursday night as we were leaving for the show.

  3. Awesome food week this week thanks to out-of-town visitors who had to be entertained… I think I’m gonna have to fast this whole week to digest everything.

    1) Terra – Been going to Afrah a lot of late, and had forgotten how awesome the lunch buffet is here. Don’t want to get into a comparison between these two outstanding places, but the vermicelli rice , kabobs, roasted cauliflower, pita bread… aww heck, everything was delicious.

    2) Mi Dia – The stacked enchiladas are great and, unlike most enchiladas, not heavy whatsoever. The fried egg with all that runny yolk pulled the whole thing together for me. Went great following the guacamole – nothing like getting to watch someone make your guac tableside in the mocajete.

    3) Shinjuku Station – So many great choices, like okonomiyaki and stir-fried edamame (why isn’t every Japanese restaurant stir-frying their edamame??), even for those who don’t like sushi. Indeed, I prefer the hot side of the menu, and didn’t get any sushi this weekend. They even converted my friend who normally does not like Japanese food. Too bad they don’t offer the ramen at dinner…

    4) Melt Ice Creams – Run, don’t walk, to this tiny little place and keep your fingers crossed they don’t have to close because they ran out of ice cream. Try the blackberry with pieces of pie crust mixed in – think they got it from their pals over at Stir-Crazy Baked Goods and if you’re like me you will end up playing “find the crust.”

    5) AF+B – Someday getting brunch on Saturday will be a thing. These guys are doing their part. The chorizo scotch eggs are great and gotta appreciate that house-cured bacon. Only downside is I was so full by the end of the meal I had no room for dessert. So sad.

    6) Royal China – Worth the trip if for nothing else than the spectacle of watching the dumpling ladies and the noodle man hard at work. I don’t know his name, but that noodle man is quite possibly the happiest man in Dallas while working. If I could make lamian, I guess I would be to.

    7) The Grape – One of the best Sunday brunch in Dallas. Should have tried something different, but can’t go wrong with the chicken biscuits. What does it say when the best burger in Texas is the second (at best) thing on the brunch menu? Buddies had the haystack and the frittata and were impressed.

    8) Meddlesome Moth – Perfect place to have a snack while waiting for a flight. Great, friendly staff and a nice porch with a great view. Best Tandoori *anything* east of Irving and south of Addison.

    9) Brewed – Really great selection of teas and coffees from Cuvee and Avoca (I always get the Cuvee though, since Avoca is right up the street). Strong menu (I have a sweet spot for the hamburger and the sweet potato fries)… cool place to close out a night.

    Finally, had a apple pie-off between Magnolia Ave’s Paris Coffee Shop and Bishop Arts’ Emporium Pies. Both great choices. No clear winner for me, but I think I preferred Paris’ crust and Emporium’s sliced apples, by the slightest of margins. I’d really rather just have a slice of each.
