Dallas Food News Round-Up

Screen Shot 2014-07-25 at 11.21.20 AM copyThis week we experienced a “lights out” dinner from Matt McCallister and guest chef Brandon Baltzley at FT33 to kick us off. See some lovely pictures from Robert Strickland here.

Restaurant shutdowns continued with Bonchon closing its Greenville Avenue location and Manny’s Uptown Tex-Mex relocating its Addison spot to a busy intersection of Richardson. Among more scandalous news, Chef John Tesar seems to be the talk of the restaurant scene with his “F You Leslie Brenner” stunt and new TV show offer. And I may be a little biased, but I would have to say the most exciting event of the week was D Magazine’s Best of Big D annual throwdown to salute the city’s greats.

Here’s a few more things you should know about for a little food news update…

Scotch & Sausage finally opened at 11 am yesterday and people were really craving wieners with a side of alcohol. The place sold out early in the evening, but that didn’t mean the party had to end. Glasses were full and the kitchen staff even managed to reopen for late night bites at 12 am until closing at 3 am. I would say this is definitely a new hot spot.

Wednesday is right behind Monday as the longest day of our lives. The cure: Wine and Massages. The Mokara Spas in the Omni Dallas Hotel, Omni Fort Worth Hotel and Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas recently launched “Wine Down Wednesday.” Every Wednesday now through the end of the year, guests and even locals can book the “Wine Down” offer for $99, which includes a cocktail or ”mocktail” and a 50-minute spa treatment of their choice. Choose between the Classic Massage, Custom Facial, or Body Treatment. Book the offer by calling the hotel directly (Omni Dallas: 214.744.6664 / Omni Fort Worth: 817.535.6664 / Omni Mandalay: 972.556.0800).

If you don’t like cheese, I don’t like you. Okay, we can still be friends, but you’re seriously missing out on a huge part of the Dallas food scene. Specifically this August, Scardello is offering 6 classes ranging from the classic Cheese 101 and Late Night to Beer vs. Wine Smackdown and Nothin’ But Cheddar. Each class offers cheese-pairing tips with wine and beer, and will introduce you to the world of cheese. Sign up at Scardello’s website.

If you were one of the individuals who frequented Sfuzzi on McKinney Avenue to fill your late night hankering for scalding hot pizza that always burned your mouth because you were too ravenous to let it cool down, then we shall take a moment of silence in their honor. Moving on, a new tenant is taking over the space called Fat Rabbit Kitchen & Bar.

When it comes to social media you need to follow the @CulinaryBroDown for serious food porn from a 21-year-old UCLA track & field athlete. He cooks, writes and shares some of the most innovative food dishes combining the world’s favorite guilty pleasures. One of my personal favorites is the Funnel Cake Burger (pictured above).

More locally, Barter got some new poutine on its menu and I need it in my face now…
