Farm-to-Market Report: Weekend of July 12th-13th

The market will host its Ol’ Fashioned Summertime Fun Event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. There will be a little something for everyone, with various kid-centered activities such as games, face painting and a splash pool and culinary creations such as hot dogs and organic popcorn. Most anticipated are root beer floats made from root beer from Rowlett’s Firewheel Brewery and ice cream from Henry’s of Plano, a long-time local favorite. In addition to the festivities, the market welcomes Moo Cheese, a new vendor with an assortment of locally made, fresh cheeses.

Coppell Farmers Market
This Saturday, the Lions Club of Coppell will present the market with a community information station, where market patrons can find information on what’s going on in the city. The formal presentation of the custom-crafted station, located in the middle of the pavilion at the market’s information table, will be at 11 a.m. Children up to 14 years old can enter drawings for prizes. While there, enjoy the fresh, summery fruit scent wafting throughout the market. Peaches, blueberries, cantaloupe and watermelon add a color and designation to the market’s aisles. However, if you’re looking for shelled peas, strawberries or broccoli, buy now as these items are quickly going out of season. Dallas Farmers Market
The Dallas Farmers Market kicks off its Summer Chef Series at 11:30 p.m. Saturday with Executive Chef David Holben, of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House. This event, sponsored by the American Institute of Wine & Food, allows participants the opportunity to meet the chef and develop their cooking skills. Holben’s class is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Market Resource Center. For his “Craveable Summertime Cooking with Pepper,” Holben will feature an orange-green peppercorn crab cocktail on a barbecue potato chip, grilled basil marinade bay of salmon with heirloom tomato jam and dill pink peppercorn crema and a warm stone fruit with cracked black pepper-key lime tequila mascarpone cream. Other classes from the Summer Chef Series will include Chef Jeff Moschetti, of Jasper’s Restaurant; Chef Patton Robertson, of Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck; Chef Michael West, of R Bar & Grill; and Chef T.J. Lengnick, of Shinsei. The cost of each class is $25 before Thursday, $30 at the door or $110 for all five classes.

This Sunday, the market will welcome HiteHouse Confections, offering a selection of handmade sea salt caramels in a variety of flavors. Indulge your sweet tooth, and swing by HiteHouse’s booth! Oak Lawn United Methodist Church Farmers Market
Stan Miklis, of Caliper Flower Market, is in his first year with the market. Miklis, who’s somewhat of a local celebrity on the area farmers market circuit, is known for his flowers and herbs. (His citronella plants are a fan favorite!) Miklis, who started farming at 14, has a 100-acre farm in Royce City and a degree in horticulture from Texas A&M. Stop by and chat with him this weekend. From Aggies to mosquito repellents, conversation will be plenty!

Rockwall Farmers Market
Despite the construction going on in downtown Rockwall, the farmers market and downtown businesses are open! Stop by Saturday and browse what the regular vendors have to offer.

Saint Michael’s Farmers Market
This Saturday, the market welcomes new vendor Healthy Tummy, Happy Baby, offering a variety of fresh, organic, homemade baby food. Founder Bridget Koenitzer, who trained at the California Culinary Academy, began researching baby products when she was pregnant with her first child. As her family grew, so did her need (and desire) to provide her children with homemade, nutritional food. Healthy Tummy, Happy Baby was born form this experience. Koenitzer offers several different options with tasty textures from pure purees to creamy cereals. Check out her online store here.
Also, the market is overflowing with freestone peaches, blueberries, blackberries and several varieties of tomatoes. Hudspeth Farm and O’Neal Grassfed Beefalo will cater to your grilling needs with grass-fed beef, pastured chicken, eggs, bratwurst, sausage and pork. The July market drive will benefit the Jubilee. Feel free to drop off coats, jackets or baby supplies at the market.

Waxahachie Downtown Farmers Market
This weekend, the market it offering much more than the typical produce. The market’s monthly installment of “Kid’s Day” will kick off Saturday at the master gardener booth, where they can make a ladybug habitat house for the backyard. Participants will also learn the importance of keeping ladybugs in the local landscape. Also, the market will host cats and dogs in need of a permanent home from the city pound. If you’re looking for a new addition to your family, check out these potential friends!
New vendor Jessica Shahan will have her assortment of glitter tattoos and colorful nail art. Vendor Sharon Perdasofpy will be demonstrating some Native American beadwork art. Watch her make earrings using a “brick stitch.” As always, the market is overflowing with an abundance of locally grown, fresh-from-the-garden fruits, vegetables and greens. The tomato crop is the best in several years, several of the farmers say. Don’t miss out!

White Rock Lake Farmers Market
Tomato, tomotto! The market’s varieties are as varied as the pronunciation.
Tye dye, mountain spring, mortgage lifter, and Cherokee purple are a few of the tomato types on hand this weekend. Also at their peaks right now are watermelons and cantaloupes. Purple hull and black-eyed peas are starting to make an appearance along with green beans.
