Bits & Bites: Things to Do and Chew the Weekend Before Christmas

Not much going on this weekend, but we all know it’s because most of us will be scouring Target’s shelves for last-minute gifts. Everybody seems to have ramen on their minds, too. Is this the big Ramen Weekend of 2013? I think so.

It’s the combination of perfect, cloudy weather and perfect, cloudy broth.

SUNDAY, DEC. 22

Pakpao started its first brunch service last weekend, but you don’t have to miss out on the taro pancakes, Thai omelette, and pork congee twice. All of it sounds tasty. It starts at 11 a.m. every Sunday.

At 11:30 a.m., Teiichi Sakurai is doing a ramen brunch special at Tei-An. It’s first-come, first-served. He’ll be doing tsukemen-style noodles with three different dipping soups. This. Sounds. Amazing. I am dying to go.

It’s a holiday open house at Arche Winery. I know, I know. It’s a far drive, but if you’re bored at home, the drive is totally worth it. From noon to 5 p.m., there will be free tastings of Arche’s newest releases and well-aged favorites, hors d’oeuvres and great deals on merchandise. It’s a party.

MONDAY, DEC. 23

One of the highlights of this (long) weekend is a pairing event put on by Máté Hartai, Omar Yeefoon, and Justin Holt. Japanese ramen and whiskey? Not a common combo, but we’ll take it. Holt is making tonkotsu at The Libertine Bar starting at 7 p.m. Get there early. These pop-up ramen bars are always pretty packed.
