Taste Test Thursday: Greek Yogurt

There are some fads I will never understand, and Greek yogurt is one of them.

(I guess I’ve never been much of a yogurt person, anyway, unless you tell me you’re making a mango lassi with it.)

But who am I to judge? Greek yogurt is good, sure. It’s swallow-able if you mix in honey, fruit, and granola. It’s great with a cup of earl grey tea in the morning. Greek yogurt is a leisurely snack. Creamy, tart, and healthy as healthy can be. Everyone has their favorite brand.

When you pour Greek yogurt out of its cup, it becomes unappetizing in two seconds flat. Trembling and watery and runny, the yogurt looks like the super opaque version of lard. Yummy, huh?

It actually took a bit of convincing to get our taste testers to get over their initial disgust.

Chobani was the most watery looking, but its taste made up for the melting factor. No wonder Chobani is one of the best-selling yogurt brands in the United States. I guess people don’t mind runny Greek yogurt, since it’s kinda like eating regular yogurt, anyway. Fage was the total opposite, but it tied with Chobani. It was the thickest of the four Greek yogurts. Very little water. Super creamy. You should buy this brand if you like your yogurt ‘staches.

Trader Joe’s yogurt was way too sour. Almost everyone who tried it made this ugly, puckered-up face. Don’t buy this brand of Greek yogurt if you can help it. Just don’t. Personally, Fage is where I’d put my money.

  1. How crazy! I just spent the past month doing my own Greek Yogurt search (crazy pregnancy craving). Hands down, the 2 best brands (in this order) are: #1 – The Greek Gods Traditional Greek Yogurt, Honey Flavored and #2 – Muller Greek Corner Lowfat Yogurt with Honeyed Apricot or any of their flavors to be honest. Central Market has #1, Albertsons has #2. Enjoy Carol! :)

  2. +1 for the Greek Gods. Love that stuff! You have to pour the water off before you put it in your own bowl.

  3. My favorite is Greek Gods traditional greek yogurts, both plain and the honey flavored. Beats any of the ones you had hands down! Noosa is my current non-greek favorite.

  4. According to the highly respected Cook’s Illustrated bi monthly magazine, Olympus brand yogurt was rated as the number one best yogurt. But alas, it’s nowhere to be seen in Dallas.

    And, I agree with twohotpotatoes regarding Fage’ 2% being the best yogurt.
    The zero fat has zero taste and texture.

  5. “Greek” yogurt is not a fad, unless you take into consideration the fact that American companies are capitalizing on one of the oldest Near East traditions. You can make your own “greek” yogurt, by taking your favorite nonfat, low fat or full fat yogurt, and straining it overnight in cheesecloth. What that does, is strain the liquid whey, lactose and sugar. I grew up, making my own yogurt, and then, making “greek” yogurt.

  6. These are all plain yogurts. They’re better used in place of sour cream or heavy cream in a recipe. There, there’s always Tziziki. The flavored ones or the ones that have fruit incorporated are the only way to go if you’re eating as a snack/meal.

  7. Greek Yogurt a fad ?????? I have been using this “fad” for 20 YEARS … Wow, look at me on the culinary cutting edge of the world … fad ! Haha

  8. Three Happy cows is the best. I hear it’s coming back soon. Market Street and Central used to carry it.
