Farm to Market Report: Weekend of June 29

It’s a short but sweet farm to market report this week. Enjoy the weekend, folks.

Coppell Farmers Market: The weekend kicks off Coppell’s Market to Kitchen series with the “Preserve Summer, Preserve Peaches” class. Trish Percy, the director of the Grow Your Own project of GROW North Texas (a nonprofit based in Dallas/Fort Worth), will teach you how to preserve peaches by canning, making jam, dehydrating and freezing. The free class starts at the main tent at 10 a.m. The next event in the series is a chef demo by Chef Jeff Bekavac of Neighborhood Services.

Special finds to keep an eye open for: big heirloom tomatoes from Hartman’s at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Pure Land Organic’s dried garlic to add flavor to any dish, and Pat Graines of Hiram Farms has a new avocado dressing that could top her popular basil pesto.

McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square and Adriatica: Kate Moore and the Kat House Band are entertaining this weekend while you shop around the market. Take advantage of the plentiful fresh fruit.

St. Michaels Farmers Market: This market keeps growing and has now reached 36 vendors. It will be welcoming Baugh Farms with four different types of heirloom tomatoes (Cherokee purple, mortgage lifter, lillans gold, and black krim). Another new produce vendor is 3Forks Produce with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and squash. Two more newcomers to the market, but familiar vendors are Merlin’s Baking (popular at Celebration Market) and PepperSmack.

Returning to supply your fruit needs are Sacshe Farm, La Esperanza Farm, and Peachy Page. Gather up some peaches here and head to Coppell for the preservation class. Blueberry season is short so don’t miss Dr. Blueberry and his organic blueberries. And there is plenty to satisfy your sweet tooth: Jazzy Fat’s Cajun Classic Pralines, Just Pie, Stephanie’s Premium Bakery, and All Natural Healthy Cookie (healthy plus cookie, perfection – well as long as it doesn’t taste too healthy).

FarmersMarketLogoOLUMC Farmers Market: Roots Juices, which just celebrated its first anniversary, will be there with Mother Shucker’s Homemade Tamales, Dream Girls Dairy Goats (milk can only be distributed at their farm, but they will have fresh eggs), Jazzy Fat’s Cajun Classic Pralines, and Texas Hill Olive Oil Company. Just look at the names of these vendors… that should bring you out. I want to meet Donna and Leonard James behind Jazzy Fat. How could you not want to know where that name comes from?

Collin County Farmers Market: Reaching the 30 vendor mark, Collin County is always a reliable source for grass-fed beef, but this weekend they will have something new: grass-fed lamb from SSR Farms. They will also be a source for organic blueberries, so buy them while they’re still in season. Make a pie or something, they’re good for you. Okay, maybe pie isn’t, but you get the picture…

Four Seasons Market: The 25 vendors are bringing some new products: French apple pies from Florine Bowman Pastries, dessert tamales (peaches and cream, peach pineapple, and blueberry cheesecake) from Tena’s Tamales and new varieties of artisans breads from Empire Baking.
