Somebody Help This Poor Girl: New Refrigerator

What an appropriate day for this gal with a head for watching reality TV and a bod for storing food to ask about refrigerators. She writes:

Hey, Nancy. Long time no see. My fridge died yesterday. Lucky I could just put everything outside last night but I’ve got to buy a new one today. What kind of fridge do you have or do you recommend? I cook a lot and like to freeze things, but I’m sick of having a side-by-side model. Maybe I’ll get one with freezer on the bottom. Maybe you’re readers have some thoughts.

I’m sick of my side-by-side but it sure beats digging through a bunch of frozen leftovers. Thoughts smart people?

I would go with a french door. It’s much easier to get large platters in an out. The freezer on the bottom has not been a problem. I personally went with a Samsung 33.5 cubic ft model. Lots of space for stuff. That being said I also have a freezer in the garage, freezer in 2/3 and fridge on a small place on top.

I have an LG, freezer on the bottom. I love it, except there’s a warning beep that goes off when you leave the door open too long. Can’t turn it off on the model I have. The beep can be helpful, but it’s annoying when you’re trying to clean the shelves and the door needs to stay open longer. Other than that, no complaints.

Samsung with freezer on the bottom. Having ‘French doors’ is the only way to go if you need to store something the size of a pizza box or larger. If I were to do it again I would get the French doors, with two drawers below like this one, although I think having picasa, twitter and google calendar on your fridge is overkill:

No matter which direction you go, be sure that when your new refrigerator is installed, that you have the plumber/appliance installer guy use a new high quality hose to connect the water supply to the ice maker intake. According to my plumber, the hoses that are included in the box with all refrigerators are low quality and will start leaking in a few years. Pay $20 now for a metal reinforced hose. Your floors and sub-flooring will appreciate it. I learned the hard way.

Check out Consumer Reports. They do all the leg work for you…

Samsung is a very reliable and high quality brand. My partner and I bought a 29 cubic foot model with French doors (side by side with freezer on bottom) and have loved it ever since. It even has two icemakers. The only thing we dont love about it is the angle of the in-door water spout – it shoots back toward the fridge and is sometimes messy – but all in all, we’re very satisfied.

Go to Lowe”s or other appliace places, pick out one or three top pics, and then call around (or websurf) for sales. Most regular priced fridges seem to have quite a bit of mark up. We found our MSRP $2900 fridge for $1800 at Lowe’s.
