2013 Soup’s On For The Stewpot Chef’s Announced

For all the events and charity functions that we have in Dallas, perhaps my favorite occurs annually on a January afternoon featuring some of the best chefs in the city making their signature soups for one of our most worthy charities in the city, Soup’s On for The Stewpot.

Led each year by Chef/ Chair Brian Luscher of The Grape creating his much loved Mushroom Soup, with the help of the dedicated members of The Stewpot Alliance, including co-chairs Kay Lunceford and Trish Weigand, the event raises both funds and awareness for the incredible work The Stewpot does helping the homeless of Dallas.

Chef Brian will be joined by Chefs Randall Copeland of Restaurant Ava; Bruno Davaillon of The Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek; Jason Maddy of Oak;  Chad Kelley of Café Pacific; Janice Provost of Parigi; Anastasia Quiñones of Komali; Abraham Salum of Salum; and Jason Weaver of the Omni Dallas, to name a few.

This year is particularly special as the great fundraising that occurred in the past has allowed The Stewpot to purchase a new building across from its facility in downtown Dallas, 508 Park, which is in development.  The building is being turned into a multi-use facility to house a music academy, recording studio, concert amphitheater, rooftop terrace, community garden, and the Museum of Street Culture.  The mission of The Stewpot is to offer a safe haven for homeless and at-risk individuals in Dallas.

Soup’s On for The Stewpot will occur on January 29, 2013 at The Omni Hotel, with the art sale beginning at  11, luncheon at noon with special guest Wes Moore, author of The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates.  Tickets and information available here.

Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert Talk Smack at Bass Hall

Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert, best buddies for life. (photo by Carol Shih)

On Friday night, Anthony Bourdain’s fans packed the seats inside Fort Worth’s Bass Hall to hear the crass No Reservations host bash Food Network stars and do his usual shtick. Except this time, Bourdain brought his bestie, Eric Ripert, along for the ride. He and the Le Bernardin chef ripped each other to shreds. It was a sight to behold. For the first hour, the friends took turns sitting under a single hanging lamp while one of them interrogated the other. Honest to turkeys, both of them would make awful policemen. They’re not intimidating enough.

Cutie pie Eric Ripert was giggling for the first 15 minutes or so, right until Bourdain started going after him. The Buddhism-practicing Frenchmen flicked Bourdain off with both hands once Bourdain jumped into a story of Ripert punching a rude dude defending his witchy wife in the face. This is a lesson to all: don’t mess with chefs. They have a mean right hook.

When it was Bourdain’s turn to sit in the hotseat, Ripert was a little more forgiving with his questions.

Somebody Help This Poor Girl: Thanksgiving Day Brunch Without Thanksgiving Day Food

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal pole of life. (Illustration by Mark A. Hicks)

We try to answer your questions before you ask them, but this high-maintenance Disher wants more than Carol can give her—a list of all of the restaurants and take-out options for Thanksgiving Day dining. Natch football is involved in her complicated scenario. Read on and rant:

We are headed to a football game on Thanksgiving Day (not the Cowboys- University of Texas).  So we will be looking for a restaurant open for brunch off the regular that day.  I am assuming a few spots will be open?  I know you always get a list of places open for dinner, but could you also ask who might be open for brunch from 8AM to 11AM? I just thought there are people like us going to football games who don’t want turkey for breakfast /brunch :)

I’m too crabby today to tell her where I’d like her to go. So perhaps you can be of assistance.

Be Thankful: The Happy Hostess Has Your Thanksgiving Plan

Whenever my mom and I host Thanksgiving, Mom will call me at the beginning of November to establish a game plan. The conversation is always the same:

Mom: I cannot believe Thanksgiving is three weeks away.

Me: I know. I haven’t even started thinking about Christmas gifts yet.

Mom: Let’s not think about Christmas. What should we serve for Thanksgiving this year?

Me: How about trying something new? I was thinking about [insert something nontraditional].

Mom: That sounds great, but you know everyone will want a turkey. Should we do both?

Me: No, that would be so much food, and they wouldn’t really go together. You’re right. Let’s stick to the usual. We can experiment at Christmas.

Jump with me for a fool-proof Thanksgiving dinner plan.
