Bits & Bites: Things to Do and Chew in Dallas This Weekend, September 21-23

It’s been awhile since I’ve done this, but I think today warrants a Friday Fun Fact Time, don’t you? According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, today is the last day of summer. Also, did you know that elephants are the only animals with four knees? For those of you who think a giraffe also has four knees, you’re wrong! Giraffes’ knees are actually wrists. I spent an inordinate amount of time researching these facts, and I remain unashamed.

Friday

Celebrate the coming of fall like a German at the Addison Oktoberfest. Watch a Deutsch spelling bee, eat some sauerkraut, chug that beer, and rock out like these guys singing Die Prinzen. (video c/o of Sabrina)

Saturday

Dine Around Uptown is a restaurant crawl starting off at Private | Social. Mingle with Tiffany and Co., and dine on hor d’oeuvres before you jet off in black cars from Uptown restaurant to restaurant. Your ticket money goes directly to the North Texas Food Bank.

Don’t forget that this weekend is the Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show in the Dallas Convention Center. You can still buy tickets to classes like “Cheese 101″ and “Easy Chocolates for Home Entertaining.” Paula Deen and Bobby Flay will both be making special appearances, so keep your eyes pealed!

The Haute Wheels Food Truck Fest is at Watter’s Creek (970 Garden Park Dr., Allen) from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is $5, but there’s free parking. Nammi, Butcher’s Son, Easy Slider, Ssahm BBQ, and Ruthie’s Rolling Cafe all promise to be there.

The fourth annual Food for Thought is benefitting Big Thought, a nonprofit dedicated to improving public education, at the Frontiers of Flight Museum from 7 to 11 p.m. Plenty of chefs from your favorite restaurants (Chiloso Mexican Bistro, Nick and Sam’s, Sissy’s, Nosh, etc.) will be there with their signature tastes for you to enjoy. Tickets start at $75 per person. To purchase, go here.

Sunday

SNACK is hosting a Paella Night on its patio from 5 p.m. to close. Enjoy paella on the wood fire for $16, grilled gulf oysters ($9 per half dozen), draft beer ($3), and caraffe sangrias ($12).
