Bits & Bites: Things to Do and Chew in Dallas

I know, I know. It’s been ages. I’m sure you all missed me. Here’s a quick rundown of delicious opportunities to eat and drink in the upcoming week, beyond your normal sustenance schedule.

Thursday, Feb. 23

Wine and chocolate at Fuqua Winery. Stephen Smith, maker of some of the best chocolate in town, leads this pairing of artisan chocolate and wine.

Merriman Wine Dinner at Steel. A four-course meal paired with wines from Merriman Wines. Mike Merriman, a Dallas native, will be in attendance.

Saturday, Feb. 25

Barleywine Experience at the Flying Saucer in Fort Worth. This event, celebrating the strong ale (8-12%) originally hailing from England, is in its third year. The brew pub will have seven different varieties on tap, plus more in bottles.

Open That Bottle Night. I have a $10 bottle of Malbec that I’ve been hoarding. Presumably, your special bottles are much nicer, and this is a great excuse to pop the cork.

Sunday, Feb. 26

BRUNCH. We’ve compiled the 24 best places to cure your hangover.

Monday, Feb. 27

Symphony of Chefs Fundraiser at the Petroleum Club (Dallas location). If you have an extra grand tucked under your mattress, this is a good cause to spend it on. Chefs Pete Nolasco, Michael Scott, and Jesus Campos donate their talents to help raise money for the KidLinks Foundation, an organization that funds therapeutic music programs for children. Each chef will prepare his own menu, select complementary wines, and interact with guests while they partake in a fine dining experience.

Yelp Drinks 2012. Hit the kick off party at The People’s Last Stand and get a free Moscow Mule and a Trailercakes cupcake, 7-9 pm. Mention Yelp at participating restaurants Feb. 27-Mar. 4 and get 50% select cocktails. On the list: The People’s Last Stand, Single Wide, Urban Taco, Trinity Hall, Victor Tangos, and The Libertine.

Tuesday, Feb. 28

Deep Ellum Brewing Company’s Dreamcrusher Double IPA Launch at Meddlesome Moth. The folks at DEBC are releasing their latest beer, a boozy double-rye IPA that would send little old me off to dream land if I drank more than two. (I’m a cheap date.) Hit the Moth for a post-work beer and those zucchini chips.

Cabernet Sauvignon Blind Tasting at Fuqua Winery. Taste at least 12 different Cabs at this tasting led by Lee Fuqua and Courtney Key.

Wednesday, Feb. 29

Coppola Wine Dinner at the Dallas Arboretum. Leave the gun at the home, and take the expensive post-dinner chocolates.
