What To Drink Now: Valentine’s Bubbly On A Budget

Though the taste of great Champagne dances on the palate like you were drinking stars from the sky, illuminating the tiny bubbles mimicking diamonds in a glass – the reality is that such a luxury is hard to afford every day, even special days like Valentine’s.  I am a big believer in opening up a special bottle on a random Tuesday, but not every special bottle has to cost you an arm and a leg.  A bottle is special because you think it is, so here are some special bottles of bubbly that are all under $25.  A few selections were sent for editorial consideration.

Segura Viudas Brut Reserva is one of the best bang for your buck bubbles from the famed Ferrer family in Spain.  Costing just around $10 a bottle, and often less, this bone dry artisanal Cava from Spain’s Penedès region blends the traditional Cava grapes of Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo together in the classic méthode champenoise technique, which is then aged up to 3 years in the bottle.  A bubbly to start or end a meal with filled with wild flowers, tropical fruit and citrus with balanced, bright acidity. The Birth of Incubator Concepts in Dallas: Trinity Groves v Sylvan| Thirty

Artist Renderings: Sylvan| Thirty and Trinity Groves.

In early December, we reported the announcement of the Sylvan| Thirty Culinary Incubator concept. In short, the still unnamed space is designed to help start-up food entrepreneurs launch their own businesses. Local chef and Earth Mother, Sharon Hage, is the director of the center which is slated to open in the early spring of 2013.

A few days ago, I received a press release: “Dallas to be Home to Nation’s First Restaurant Incubator.” The one-and-a-half page announcement outlined the grandiose plans behind Trinity Groves, a 13-acre development also dedicated to helping local wannabe restaurateurs get up and running. I filed an story on Trinity Groves yesterday.

I think it’s interesting Dallas will soon be home to two incubator programs. Especially since they are both located in west of the Trinity River. I decided to compare the two programs.

Jump for the full report.

TX Delizioso Rolls into the Arts District

Italian sausage pizza (left); Co-owner Sydney Brown (right) photos by Micah Nunley

I stalked TX Delizioso on Twitter all weekend until they confirmed @carol_shih: “Come see us in the Arts District this Tuesday!” There was no way I was going to miss the debut of Dallas’ first pizza truck, so I quickly grabbed photo intern Micah Nunley to take some snaps of Sydney Brown and Lauren Noblett’s newest set of wheels: a truck offering made-to-order pizza and other Italian entrees.

Here’s how my lunch went down.

Random Notes: New Technology Creates Luxury At Hôtel Plaza Athénée In Paris

I get a lot of press releases. Many of them are misdirected messages about skin care products, fashion tips with subject lines like: Gear Up For National Bike Month. The letters of the delete button on my keyboard reads “d…te.” My ring finger was headed for “d…te” until the words in the subject line—luxury, Athénée, Paris—leaked through my tired brain. For perspective: the least expensive, off-season room at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée is around $1,400 bucks a night. With that, I copy and paste one of the new technologies they have added to their amenities. I want this so bad.

Serene Sleep – Guests can now bid troubled sleep and jetlag symptoms farewell with the NightCove Sleep Solution, available in the property’s Art Deco Suites and at the Dior Institut Spa. Developed by the Sleep Clinic at Hotel-Dieu hospital in Paris, this device is a unique bedside lamp that helps improve the quality of sleep by bathing guests in selected light wavelengths and sound frequencies that are specially adapted for the physiological needs of sleep. Click on “Sleep/Anti-jetlag/Nap” to stimulate melatonin with a red glow and the hush of waves, then greet the day with a “Wakening” of soft music and blue light similar to early daylight.

Sigh. “d…te.”

Nosh on Duck and Sip Duckhorn Wine at Nosh Euro Bistro in Dallas

This just in, but just as quickly as you read this it could be sold out. Nosh Euro Bistro is hosting a Duckhorn Vineyards tasting accompanied by a four course meal prepared by Nosh’s chef Jon Stevens. Menu is below but it looks like the evening is going to be a lot of fun. The wine focus is not just on the Duckhorn brand (e.g. the Cabernet Sauvignon) but also Duckhorn’s Portfolio Collection of labels: Migration from Burgundian varietals, Golden Eye from California’s Anderson Valley, and Paraduxx focusing on Napa Valley red blends. Note that Steven’s menu includes duck (but no horn). Continue reading "Nosh on Duck and Sip Duckhorn Wine at Nosh Euro Bistro in Dallas"
