  1. Well, I *will* be checking out Spec’s at Walnut Hill and 75, but I haven’t made it there yet. I was hoping to find someone else’s observations here! Anyone? Spec’s??

And speaking of updates, anything new on a Dallas Trader Joe’s? Feels like forever since I’ve heard anything on that.

  2. I’m addicted to the No. 15 taco at Velvet Taco: fried oysters, napa cabbage-fennel slaw, remoulade, and smoked chili butter. I think I eat it at least once a week.

  3. Went to Mercury on Preston/Forest. What a disappointment. Have always enjoyed going there so much. What is going on with Chris Ward – never thought that he would send out such below par food………really sad. Won’t be back……

  4. Lockhart Smokehouse for the Wednesday special beef rib. TOTAL MEH! The rib looked great but, it was tasteless, tough, and undercooked. No smoke flavor whatsoever and it definitely needed a few more hours in the smoker to make it tender. And, it was a joke trying to cut into it with the little “toy” plastic knife and fork they give you. Cost? $18.00! The staff, plus the way they run this place is a joke. I like their brisket but It’s going to be a long time before I return.

Lunch today at A Wok in Plano. A very authentic and unusual ethnic Chinese restaurant serving the most unusual delicious dishes that you won’t see on many Chinese menus in town. Want periwinkles with basil? They gottem! Very good, too! I especially loved our clam soup. Try not to use the bathroom, however. It gets an “F” for cleanliness.

  5. @DesignBoy. That’s my favorite taco at VT as well.

  6. Started the week at Fearings; for the Granny’s Sunday Night Family Dinner. Absolutely, the best fried chicken I have ever had. The sides were not so bad either. Highly recommend, and a great price for a family.

Spec’s was only offering “their” pricing for cash business, not for credit cards. Not that impressed, other stores in the neighborhood have just as good selection and better prices.

  7. Can only speak to the wine prices at Spec’s. Great selection and everything I usually buy is 3 to 5 dollars less there than anywhere else. Have been 3 times already this week.

  8. If the restrooms are dirty, the kitchen is usually worse. Asian restaurants are famous for filthy kitchens.

  9. The Pancake House in Addison has a fine spinach and chicken crepe enchilada.

  10. @Gizzard. That’s exactly what I told my friends when I returned to the table.

  11. Went to Brix in Ft. Worth. Very good pizza and a bargain at under $7 for a 10″ pie. Friendly service, too. I tried the grilled romaine sprinkled with almonds and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. Reminded me of an asian stir-fried bok choy. BBQ chicken pizza was a bit too saucy, but flavor was pleasantly tangy.

Garden Cafe in east Dallas. My husband loves their chicken and dumplings. The vibe is laid back and comfortable. Fresh, fresh fruit and vegetables grace the plates.

Grimaldis at Park and Central across from NorthPark. Just another in a long line of mediocre casual chain restaurants that dot the landscape. Pizza is actually better than average, but overall, a disappointment.

  12. Back Country BBQ. Went two weeks ago and the ribs were stellar. I held them upside down and shook, and the meat just fell off the bone. Felt they were the best I’d had in Dallas in forever. However, went again this week, and not quite as great. Not nearly as tender. Very good sides though, especially the cole slaw and spinach w/cheese (farewell, sweet arteries).
