Here’s another great reason to head downtown during Texas/OU weekend: the folks at DRG (Dallas Chop House, Wild Salsa, Dallas Fish Market) and Downtown Dallas Inc. have teamed up to create the Texas/OU Red River Barbecue Shootout. What is the Red River Barbecue Shootout, you ask? It’s a competition between four pitmasters from Oklahoma and four from Texas on one night followed by a rocking party the next. The dudes doing the cooking are:
Kent Black Keith Jennison
Black’s – Lockhart Elmer’s – Tulsa
Joe Duncan Charles Smith
Baker’s Ribs – Dallas Leo’s BBQ - Oklahoma City
Kelly Duncan Jev Vandegrift
Big Daddy’s – Lavon Van’s Pig Stand – Shawnee
Cliff Payne Joe Wells
Cousin’s – Fort Worth Smokin’ Joe’s Rib Ranch and RV Park – Davis
The competition will take place on October 6. Pitmasters will be cooking their signature St. Louis pork ribs and sauces all day in Downtown’s Main Street Garden (St. Paul and Main Street) for a 7 p.m. special private judging by a panel of food experts, sports industry members, and community leaders. From this “blind” judging (where judges will not know who cooked what recipe and judge only on food) , two winners, one from Oklahoma and one from Texas will be selected. (The panel of judges will be announced in advance of October 6.)

I’m just listening to Leslie Brenner on KERA’s Think with Krys Boyd. She just stated that Dallas is “dessert challenged.” Apparently we like our desserts “too sweet.” Agree or disagree?33 Comments »
In case you didn’t know, every Tuesday, Il Cane Rosso (the mobile arm of Cane Rosso in Deep Ellum) brings its mobile oven to Veritas and tosses its signature Neapolitan pies on the fly. Word on the street, however, is that the Il Cane Rosso rig will not be at Veritas tonight because Jerrier’s getting his van all “pimped out” (his words not ours), and it won’t be ready until tomorrow. Curious? Stop by Times Ten Cellars in Lakewood tomorrow to check it out.
Last weekend, Rebecca Knop opened the doors on Lovers Lane Olive Oil Company in the former Consignment Galleries space. The store features 40 flavors of extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars from Modena, Italy on tap, in flavors such as Persian lime and spicy harissa extra virgin olive oil, and dark chocolate and espresso balsamic vinegars. Go in for a tasting and walk out with a kitchen essential. This is the second location for the Grapevine Olive Oil Company. Within the same building, Baked Spice specializes in hard to find chili peppers, sugars, salts, as well as cooking and baking accessories.5 Comments »

If I told you this gal’s last name, you would know she is not financially challenged. However, her lack of knowledge about good hot dogs in Dallas is deprived. She writes:

Nancy, I am in the mood for a real hot dog. Not a boiled on like the guy outside of Home Depot (YUCK!). Every time we go to New York I go to Nathan’s (YUM!) is there anything like that here?
In an attempt to upstage Leslie Brenner’s appearance on KERA’s Think with Krys Boyd, those crafty dudes at Bolsa are making a “major announcement” on their Facebook page at noon.
UPPITY DATE: Hmm, I hear they are taking over the Confusion space. Chefs will be familiar…
UPPITY DATE: False on space. True on chefs.1 Comment »
Taco Cabana is introducing these tacos for a limited time. They sent me a coupon for one and I found them delicious and good value (under $6 for a platter of two with rice and beans).
