Buy Some Booze, Try a Food Truck at Sigel’s in Dallas

Sigel’s is “rolling out” a partnership with several Dallas food trucks as well as Il Cane Rosso.  The trucks will be pulling up at Sigel’s Greenville, Addison, and Sigel’s Elite (the store at 3209 N. Fitzhugh).  The events with Nammi truck as well as Il Cane Rosso will include wine tastings.  This will be one of your best opportunities to try Gandolfo’s NY Deli, Ssahm Korean BBQ, and Nammi Vietnamese fare.  Here’s the schedule as of today.  We’ll update you on any changes.

Jump for the schedule. Continue reading "Buy Some Booze, Try a Food Truck at Sigel’s in Dallas"

Dallas Trend Prediction: Guajillo Chile Peppers are the New Jalapeno

Guajillo peppers on my counter make me happy.

We already know that parsley, as a garnish,  is out and micro greens are in. Also, a hamburger is not a hamburger unless it has a pickle or cornichon skewered to the top bun. Today, I predict the demise of the jalapeno and the rise of the guajillo pepper. I know it’s a bold statement, but I’m feeling bold and douchey today. So, if you have anything better to suggest, I’m all (deleted).

The Velvet Taco to Open in Dallas

There is some mighty big bragging on the soon-to-open Velvet Taco’s website. Due to open in July, they claim:

A new kind of taco is coming. A taco that will change your world. A taco that will change the world.

I can’t wait for the world to change.  I hope it will be one without douchey bars and taco gourmet burger cupcakes. See you at 3012 Henderson Avenue in July.

Abomination of the Week: Hot Dog-Flavored Potato Chips at 7-Eleven

Does anyone actually like the taste of a typical hot dog? Isn’t it always about the condiments?

Restaurant Review: The Cedars Social in Dallas

Crispy pork belly and retro cocktails. photography by Kevin Marple.

When I first walked into The Cedars Social, I felt like I was having an acid flashback to my wild-child days in the ’70s. One side of the dining room is dominated by a round gas fire pit with amber-colored fire glass and a huge trumpet-shaped hood hanging from the original exposed wooden ceiling above it. Beyond the fire pit, two long banquettes upholstered in shades of robin’s egg blue and a bronzy brown run along a wood-paneled wall. A conversation area consisting of a vintage love seat and two cushy wingback chairs sits amid the dining tables, which are surrounded by the funky, round-bottomed metal chairs made famous in the ’60s by Harry Bertoia. The lighting fixtures and other accents are a playful hodgepodge collected from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. Taking it all in, I would not have been surprised if a hostess dressed in a flowing paisley Pucci pantsuit had asked me to toss my car keys into a bowl.

Stay with me now.

What to Drink Now: Palacios Remondo

Spanish wine maker Alvaro Palacios of Palacios Remondo Winery was in Dallas recently for the Spanish promotion at Central Market  and I had a chance to visit with him and sample his impressive wines from Rioja.

At 18 Alvaro knew his purpose was to be a winemaker.  Yes, it was the tradition of his family, as he is a 5th generation wine maker, but he had a choice to follow in the family business or branch out on his own as several of his 8 siblings had.
