Opportunities to Taste Around Town

There are a handful of great opportunities to taste both wine and spirits around town in the next few days.  Here are a few that top my list.

Central Market continues their tribute to Spain with 20% off Spanish wine this weekend when you buy at least 6 bottles, 25% off 8 bottles or more.  Run by tonight for a chance to meet Álvaro Palacios, of Bodegas Palacios Remondo in Rioja.

I just had the chance to have lunch with Alvaro this week and he is as charming as his wines are vibrant, elegant and memorable.  Grab a bottle of the Placet Valtomelloso, a white Rioja made from 100% Viura grapes which open in the glass transforming the wine from rich mineral flavors to  subtle floral and herbal notes.

Also this weekend at The Taste of Addison Robert Mondavi Winery will host their Discover Wine tour where guests will learn everything about wine from how it is made, to what is the best pairing.  This is the 5th year of the Mondavi wine discovery tour with the goal to help both wine novices and aficionados enjoy their glass just a little bit more.   Continue reading "Opportunities to Taste Around Town"

Taste of Addison This Weekend

It’s that time. Addison’s weekend long food and music fest starts at 6:00 p.m. tonight. Featured area restaurants include Blue Mesa Grill, Buttons, Cafe Brazil, Tiff’s Treats, Mi Piaci, Freebirds, Fogo de Chao, and tons more. Concerts by Tracy Lawrence, Chris Young, The Killdares, and my personal favorite, Third Eye Blind, are happening on the main stage.

Backyard Chicken Coops in Dallas

My mother grew up in a small town outside of Archer City, Texas. A couple of nights a week she watched her mother go out in the back yard, grab one of the many chickens running around the yard and snap its neck. A couple hours later the former “pet’  was devoured for dinner. It wasn’t a trend; it was how they lived.

Now having a groovy chicken coop in your backyard or on a patio in New York is trendy. The gals over on the D Home blog have the scoop on the “must have” coop. If you want to get your backyard bird party started, the folks at Northaven Gardens have the knowledge and supplies. I’d rather have a goat.

I just received a tweet from Nammi Truck, a new mobile Vietnamese kitchen. Nammi will make its debut tomorrow  at the Deep Ellum Open Market from 11AM-5PM. I’m waiting for more information, but their profile on Twitter (@nammitruck) states: “Bringing Vietnamese Banh Mi to the DFW Metroplex!”

Monica Greene to Open BEE in Arlington

Monica Greene opened her first location of BEE, a casual “enchiladaria” in Oak Cliff in late January. Today she says she’s signed a lease on a new space for another BEE. Downtown Arlington will be home to BEE which will be nestled in between a new Flying Fish another location of Twisted Root. The cozy threesome will be on W. Abram between S. Elm and S. East Street. BEE, an acronym for best enchiladas ever, is a build-your-own enchilada concept focused on fresh, organic ingredients.

Once she gets the new BEE in her bonnet, Monica is going to open a ” true Mexico City-style full-service restaurant”  in an unfinished space at the ILUME building not just down from Dish. She is building the 3,500 square-foot restaurant “from the ground up.” She has changed the name from Distrito but hasn’t come up with a replacement.

Hmm. Maybe we could help her with that.
