The Anti-In-N-Out Burger in Dallas Video

This video, by Kyle Corley, illustrates how long the car line for the drive thru at the In-N-Out in Allen was around noon today. I wouldn’t wait that long to kiss George Clooney. Or, oh never mind. I’m over In-N-Out. Next trend up. Good work, Kyle.

Brews News: Free 36-Beer Tasting at Sigels, Hairy Eyeball at Meddlesome Moth

Before we get swept away by a twister, I wanted to let you know about some additions to our weekly Brews News updates:

Sigel’s Craft Beer Festival at the Greenville location on May 18 from 6 to 8 pm. Reps from 19 craft brewers will be on hand handing out samples of 36 craft beers. While you sip, keep an eye out for special guest, Michael Lalli, brewmaster at Choc Beer Co.

Just call Sigel’s at 214-739-4012 to RSVP and reserve your Craft Beer Festival Passport. This will get you tasters of 20 of the 36 Craft brews available. As you sample each beer, the rep will stamp your passport. When you have finished tasting, have your passport validated then turn it in to be entered in a prize drawing.

Oh yeah, and it’s free.

Mother Nature Effs Up Another Event

So, we were all set to hit the kick off of Central Market’s Passaporte España this evening from 5-8 for the Paella Kick Off in the parking lot. Clearly, the big sister in the sky has other plans. Thunderstorms and tornado warnings abound. CM’s media person tells me that the tent is up now (2:40 pm) and will stay up as long as the weather holds. Once the weather blows in, all bets are off.

The bottom line: unless you can go now, I’d suggest finding some indoor fun.

UPDATE: The EXPERT PAIRING: SPANISH FOOD & WINE class with Miguel Torres Jr., Quim Marques & Daniel Olivella scheduled for tonight at 6:30 pm will go on inside, in The Central Market Cooking School, as planned.

Two-Bite Tacos and New Tie-Loosening Cocktails at Fearing’s

Expect a slate of new seasonal cocktails and free two-bite tacos as part of Fearing’s new happy hour (Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m.). Forget dry chicken and “ground meat product;” these mini tacos will be stuffed with lobster, chicken, shrimp, wild mushroom, buffalo, and barbecued brisket. Take your sustenance at The Rattlesnake Bar or outside at the Live Oak Bar’s fireplace under the stars.

The new slate of adult libations includes:

  • Texas Mar-TEA-Ni, featuring Hanger orange vodka, Cointreau, simple syrup, and iced tea
  • Sparkling Summer Sangria, made of white wine, Mathilde Peche, fresh fruit, and Dolin dry vermouth
  • GIN-28, featuring Roxor Gin, Anjou pears, fresh lime, elderflower, and club soda.

Feel like something a little more substantial? Try Fearing’s new Jonah crab salad on fried green tomatoes; shrimp and vegetable stir fry; highly-marbled Oxford, Arkansas pork chop with red chili rabbit empanadas; a trio of summer fruit popsicles; and coconut cupcakes with fried coconut cream pies.

May is National BBQ Month (As If We Needed a Reason to Fire Up the Grill)

May is National Barbecue Month. As you limber up your flipping wrist in anticipation of the next few weeks, multitask by reading through these BBQ cooking tips from John McLemore’s book, DADGUM, That’s Good! Kickbutt Recipes for Smoking, Grilling, Frying, Boiling and Steaming and let us know what he left out. (Sure, some are no-brainers, and some are a little cheesy, but I’m willing to bet there’s a little nugget of new information in there for everyone.)

Community Gardners Read This!

If you have volunteered with your local community garden for at least 2 years and are over 21 years old this could be your day!  Robert Mondavi’s Woodbridge wine has partnered with the American Community Gardening Association to create the Giving Through Growing program in which they will award prizes totaling $40,000 to a local ‘Heroes’ who have a passion for gardening and a desire to improve their community while increasing the ability of fresh fruits and veggies in their neighborhoods.  Applicants should apply here with their ideas on how to positively impact and enrich their neighborhoods through community gardens.  Applications will be accepted until May 22 so don’t delay your submission.  I love this idea as we see more and more community gardens popping up all around town with our continued slow food focus on eating locally sourced products and garden fresh ingredients.

In-N-Out Burger Opening Madness in Dallas: A Report From the Field

In-N-Out staff smile through the store window before opening the doors.

Brooks Powell spent some time last night and early this morning at the opening of the first In-N-Out in Texas. Not only did he get to talk to the owner of the company, but he met the first guy in line and the first guy in the drive-thru line. These are serious INO fans (aka freaks). Jump for Powell’s report.
