A well-informed, reliable Oak Cliff-dwelling person informed me that chef Kelly Hightower walked into the restaurant and punched one of his partners (“the dude who usually works the door”) around 7:30 pm on Friday night. “The guy’s face was all bloody,” says my secret source. “And the dining room was packed.” Talk of the incident is the buzz of conversation all over the OC. I contacted Hightower and he replied, “Nova has no comment at this time.”20 Comments »
Price tags on wine can often be the one thing to steer you away from a bottle. Can a six dollar bottle of wine really be good? Yes, to my great delight, it can. I have had a few very reasonably priced selections recently that are worth every penny they cost, and more. A few selections were sent for editorial consideration, a few I have just found.
I was at Jimmy’s last weekend and tried an Orvieto from Umbria, Italy – 2009 Melini Orvieto Classico. Jimmy’s has just started carrying this nutty white wine with a great balance of minerality and earthiness with light citrus and melon flavors. The wine is very dry with solid acidity; incredibly drinkable, and retails at Jimmy’s for $6.99.
I used to love to cook. My ex-husband used to invite scads of people over whenever I decided to get down in the kitchen. However, for a variety of reasons (love the shoes!), I don’t cook much anymore. I tend to do a lot of heating up and potato baking. This morning, the James Beard Foundation hit me with a divine recipe for duck meat loaf. I am born again. The master of my new universe? Chef Ryan Angulo of Buttermilk Channel in Brooklyn. All I need is a Dallas source for ground duck meat and I’m good to go on this. Duck fat can cure the blues for sure.3 Comments »
Check out the picture of Desoto Town Center. With respect to Henry S. Miller, Desoto Town Center is, as Lyle Lovett would say, it looks ugly from the front. Hark! This morning comes the news that DTC is about to get some groove. Buttons Jazz Café is set to bring in some chicken and waffles and live music.
