Dr. Bells BBQ on Main St. Closes

A fellow D staffer emailed this morning to report that Dr. Bells BBQ on Main Street has closed. Here’s what we know: it was open on Friday and had padlocked doors today. If there’s a story there, we’ll find it, but the sad bottom line is that that the Downtown lunch crowd has one less option to choose from.

Thanks to a matching grant, your dollar will now feed eight people.

Not sure if you knew this, but the USDA reported this morning that Texas is the second hungriest state in the nation. This isn’t just sad news given the fast-approaching holiday season; it’s just plain old sad.

Quick Rant: The Closing Go Fish Ocean Club Stinks Like Rotten Fish

I am on vacation. I vowed I would not use a computer for 10 days. Well, despite the lovely beach, fine food, and great reading I’ve done, I can’t fight my addiction with connecting to the Internet any longer.

Yesterday, I jumped on quickly to learn that Go Fish Ocean Club closed after business on Saturday night. This morning I checked in to find a this comment from Uppercase Matt:

TD’s facebook says: Chef Tiffany Derry: Last nite the owners of Go Fish closed its doors and decided not to tell me nor the staff anything. How do you tell all the guys that has been with you for over 2 years that they no longer have a job.Like a thief in the night they packed everything away and til this point has not called to explain anything to me. It wont hold me down because tomorrow is a new day and God is good all the time, vengeance is the Lord

I spoke with Mike Hogue and John Tesar a couple of weeks ago.  Hogue assured me he was dedicated to building several restaurants downtown. I asked him about the prospect of Tesar getting his own restaurant and got a vague answer. I don’t have my notes here, but Hogue basically said he loved working with John and John had done some amazing things at Dallas Chop House and the new concepts without answering my direct question. I got the feeling that Tesar had to open 2 or 3 spots before Hogue would build Tesar his own kitchen.

Tesar told me was no longer corporate culinary director. He said he is a consultant for DRG. I’ve heard several reports of Tesar talking to other restaurant projects in town. The whole situation is a discombobulated mess.  Hogue wants to open restaurants; Tesar wants to cook.

However, closing Go Fish Ocean Club without telling chef Tiffany Derry was rude and disrespectful. Maybe it was a good business decision, but Hogue’s method stinks.I understand Hogue can do whatever he wants—it’s his money and his operation. But Derry’s appearance on Top Chef brought national attention to Mike Hogue as a successful restaurateur. Maybe it didn’t bring customers but, at the very least, he should have included her in his plans for Go Fish Ocean Club.

Bella Restaurant & Bar Owners Clear Out Under Cover of Night

A relative of a D staffer with first-hand knowledge of the goings-on at the newly closed Bella Restaurant & Bar in Uptown let us in on an interesting tidbit: turns out that Bella’s owners not only ceased operations last Thursday night, but also ransacked the place in a dark-of-the-night flee, making off with tables, chairs, walk-in coolers, ovens, and cook tops. Need we also point out that they bailed on their lease?

At least they appropriated some booze from behind the bar on their way out. That should help with any pesky remorse that might pop up.

Oh, Come All Ye Hop Heads to Common Table on Sunday Nights for Brew Masters Viewing Parties

On Discovery Channel's new show Brew Masters, Dogfish Head Brewery's Sam Calagione and archaeologist Alexei Vranich meet with a traditional chicha maker in Cusco, Peru who carries generations of knowledge about brewing up all the variations of the drink. (photo courtesy of Discovery Channel)

When the Discovery channel announced the development of Brew Masters, a new shadow-style reality show following the men behind the malt, specifically the brew-ventures of Dogfish Head Brewery’s brewer-founder Sam Calagione, we jumped for joy (or would have if we hadn’t had so much beer last night).

We thought we couldn’t be happier as we marked our calendars for the Nov. 21 premier.

Flash forward to last Saturday morning when I received an email from my buddy Jeff Fryman, in-house cicerone at The Common Table, who told me that, starting with the premier episode at 9pm on the 21st, The Common Table will be throwing Sunday evening viewing parties.

Happiness officially compounded.

“Hey,” says Jeff, “if people can have Sex in the City parties we damn sure can have one for our favorite beverage, right?”

Be sure to call ahead if you want them to save you a seat. But beware if you’re seated next to one of us; we SideDishers can get a little mouthy, I mean handsy, I mean excitable when we drink.

Consider yourself forewarned.
