Off Topic Rant: Mick Jagger on Larry King Live

I rarely watch Larry King Live. The guy makes my skin crawl. However, I could not resist watching Mick Jagger’s appearance last night. The subject? One of my favorite albums of all time, Exile on Main Street. First of all, the gig wasn’t live and every segment ended with Larry standing in front of a zillion images from the EOMS album cover (and soon-to-be-released documentary)  in starched jeans, red shirt, and those stupid suspenders. I hate to say this but I would have rather endured Barbara Walters—at least she would have listened to the freakin’ record. King prefaced two questions with, “You know my old pal Frank Sinatra used to tell me…”

On a better note,  I did discover a nice King Ranch casserole at the new Eatzi’s store on Lovers Lane where the music of Placido Domingo almost shattered my ear drums as I watched owner Phil Romano and his family dine alfresco and chat with local PR maven, Martha Tiller.

Thanks Larry, I know you can’t always get what you want, but at least this morning I’m happy and remembering what I can still remember of Austin in 1972.

  1. Greatest rock album of all time. I was going to see Mick Taylor (stones lead guitarist for exile) at Granada tonight but he cancelled. Damn You pneumonia! Only the stones can reissue an album that didn’t sell well, have any hit singles, sound the way they wanted or get good reviews upon release…and make it the most talked about album of 2010.

  2. I saw Mick very up close at a bar in Mystique about ten years ago, and he was with his children, drinking a diet coke. He looked fantastic in person and was rather subdued the whole night….but then he did get on the tiny dance floor and shook his “groove thang”. Interesting night.

  3. ya baby, i remember it well, those were the good old days. when my daughter was a southmore in high school, i took her to Chicago, to the VOODO lounge concert, told her this ain’t no pearl jam honey, tonight you’ll see real rock&roll,,,, she loved it
was going to go back to Denver Co. and go again.

  4. What the hell is with the, waaay too loud opera music at Eatzie’s on Lovers Lane? Too loud and, too distracting!
Keeps me from going in there on a regular basis.

  5. I like Eatzie’s on Lovers but they have nothing that is worth puting up with that LOUD music. They will surely, eventually get the message, turn it down or off and I will gladly go back.

  6. Jon from tjs: Which reviews did you read? The album went to #1 in the US and UK charts.

Listen to the link I left above. The Stones loved the sound — so did a loty of critics.

  7. Oh Exile on Main St. how I love you so. I used to call myself the biggest Stones fan under 30, but just hit 34, and can’t use that moniker anymore. Mick’s interview was fine, always enjoy hearing one the genious’ talk about his game…pretty funny seeing Mick slightly downplaying the drug use, b/c understanding that he is an example for his kids now…but come on Mick, we all have youtube, and we’re all just a click away, from watching you frantically / wonderfully move about during that magical 70’s period. this one’s my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8OGdBt915s
