Semi-Finalists for 2010 James Beard Awards Announced: Sharon Hage and Stephan Pyles Represent Dallas

Fun Fact: James Beard painted his bedroom the same color as Campbell’s Tomato Soup.

Hmm. Murmur. The semi-finalists for the Restaurant and Chef division of the annual James Beard Awards were announced yesterday. Dallas is represented chef Sharon “Susan Lucci” Hage for Best Chef Southwest, Stephan Pyles for Outstanding Chef, and Samar by Stephan Pyles for Best New Restaurant. Finalists will be announced on March 22 in New Orleans. The big brouhaha James Beard Foundation Awards Dinner will take place May 2 and 3 in New York. Check out the full list below. My votes aren’t for “sale” but I’d like to hear who you’d pick. (BTW, Dallas hasn’t much of a chance until we get Las Vegas out of the Southwest. IJS.)

14 comments on “Semi-Finalists for 2010 James Beard Awards Announced: Sharon Hage and Stephan Pyles Represent Dallas

  1. Your vote may not be for sale, but apparently this was Samar by Stephan Pyles for Best New Restaurant. While good, I have yet to figure out what all the rage is about.

  2. Dallas wasn’t exactly well represented on this list. 3 nominations only? Just glancing the list, Des Moines, Milwaukee and Minneapolis have more nominations.

  3. As a voting member, I can say PR people don’t cast votes. At least not in the Southwest region. There is also some apathy among voters as the awards tend to be so LA-Vegas-LA centric in the end. Once the initial nominations are sent in, the list goes to all of the voting members across the country. You can only vote for restaurants you’ve sampled. What are the chances that some voter in New York, LA, or Vegas has dined at Restaurant Ava in Rockwall or even Bolsa in Oak Cliff? It’s more likely that they’ve encountered Stephan Pyles or Dean Fearing or Kent Rathbun somewhere along the way since they’ve been around longer. To be honest, I nominate Avner Samuel every year and I’ve never seen him on a ballot.

  4. NN – the chances the voters have dined at Restaurant Ava or Bolsa are probably greater than dining at La Mie in Des Moines or Heidi’s in Minneapolis (both on the list).

  5. I wish that Dallas were better represented too, but it’s nice to see Saipin Chutima getting recognized for the work at Lotus of Siam. Just seeing the name makes me want to get on a plane.

  6. I am with you on this one Randy. I only see Dallas with 3 notations. There are excellent places in Dallas that have been left off. Either way I am not originally from Dallas but have been to the notorious Restaurant Ava and they stand a very good chance.

  7. Pretty interesting post. Couldn’t of written any better. Reading this post reminds me of my old bud. He constantly kept speaking about this. I will send this post to him. Am sure he will have a good read. Thanks for sharing! :)

  8. I’d really like to see Sharon finally win for BEST CHEF SOUTHWEST. She’s always on the list, never won but makes phenomenal food.

  9. Sharon at York Street rocks & has been knocking it out of the park for years with no PR machine at all. Ava has gone in to little Rockwall that is a mess with road construction and has put the town on the map! Those big LA-NY type would have a hard time finding these kind of places (there’s no spot lights or cameras flickering). I’m kinda glad…makes it a little easier to get a table for us locals!!
