Houston Critic Robb Walsh Is No Longer Anonymous

File this one under controversy: Houston Press restaurant critic Robb Walsh has decided that being anonymous is no longer on his priority list. Says Walsh:

The fact is, my job is changing. I was hired as a newspaper restaurant critic and feature writer. Today I am, first and foremost, a blogger. It’s a little ludicrous to try and maintain your anonymity while you are photographing your plate. And sometimes you need to identify yourself to get a interview. The time has come to adjust to fit my new job description.

  1. Very interesting to see blogging become the primary focus.

Unrelated – Lola closed Saturday night with great elegance and beauty. Food and wine were exquisite and generous. The chef, kitchen, waitstaff and friends, complete with pinata and plastic nose/glasses/eyebrows costumes enjoyed a festive Halloween farewell.

  2. This Walsh trend might make it easier on La Nancy who was allegedly spotted recentl in restaurants wearing first a modified Crystal Gayle waist-length (reputedly Dynel) ‘fall’ at lunch followed at dinner sporting the Lady Gaga white ‘Lolita’ wig and then the next night seen in her signature on-the-job Heidi braids.

  3. Hmmm. Could it be that a very large man who wears cowboy hats all the time was not very anonymous in the first place?

(Rawlins: I am referring to Robb Walsh, not Nancy.)

  4. Walsh didn’t come out, he was outed. Now he is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Better he recognize that the reasons he stayed anonymous all those years are as valid today as they were then. It has just become harder.

Oh, and if you are seen wielding a camera or cameraphone to shoot your food you just look like everybody else. Dead wood journalism critics have people who do the photos for them.

  5. I use a Ruger No. 1 or a Remington 1100 to shoot my food. IJS. Opening day of deer season (rifle) is this weekend. Fresh venison coming right up.

  6. Very interesting article. Couldn’t be written any better. Browsing this post reminds me of my old friend. He always kept speaking about this. I will send this post to him. Am sure he will have a good chuckle. Thanks for sharing! :)
