According to a recent TG Outburst, there has been a major shake up down at Screen Door. Chef Fitzgerald Dodd is out and the odd couple of Mico Rodriguez and chef David McMillan have been hired to redo the place. Fitzgerald Dodd has been a great chef for that restaurant. This situation reeks of Dodd getting squeezed out in a power play for management. Original owner Scott Jones has vanished somewhat silently from the scene. Where is general manager Rick Stein? Screen Door is now Dallas’ hottest soap opera. Could Fedora be far behind? Interesting, isn’t it?

What?! I loved the food over there. The decor, too. Wonder what type of “redo” is being envisioned. Sounds fishy.
Its about time! His menu was a horrible excuse for southern cookin’. The fried chicken and collard greens flat out offended me. $30 and it was just like shake n bake chicken. Bland, awful texture, and it didn’t even taste fried. The collard greens were mushy and the vinegar/hot sauce were pre cooked in. Simply awful!
I’ve had fried chicken and collard greens in Charlotte, NC for less than $10 that destroyed this poor attempt from Dodd. Don’t even get me started on the Shrimp & Grits (Dodd, you need to take a trip to Charleston, SC and take notes!)
I will say he has some serious guts trying to do a modern spin on southern food! That’s a dangerous territory to hang your reputation. This kind of cooking is near and dear to peoples hearts and the odds that you are going to produce something better than the cheap little hole in the wall restaurants that have been serving up the country’s best southern cookin’ for decades are slim… I don’t care how big of a deal chef you are, or how cool of a concept you think you have.
Scott Jones is opening a Southern diner in downtown Fort Worth–
Couldn’t agree with tomvin more. I was so disappointed with Screen Door. I should have listened to all of my friends who told me not to go.
had to use a knife to cut into my Halibut…and risotto was crunchy. i thought Fedora already shut down???
Nice upside down photo!
Kellyn is spot on. The food at the price was too far off. Give me Lubys over that for the price… and that’s saying a lot.
It was nice you to mention Mico. Does this mean your boyfriend is no longer owed money? No more hatchet jobs on D Mag?
Dear Mike, a hatchet job on Mico? Mico said 80% of the story was true. No, I think Mico and McMillan could be a great team for overhauling a restaurant. I just don’t understand the need for four big names. I’m hoping someone will explain it to me today.
Scott Jones is the new Avner Samuel. Maybe they could both open up restaurants at the same time and put up some high stakes to see who closes it the first. Scott is clearly second league but he moved up in the draft standings with the Cafe Italia fiasco in Oak Cliff.
Dallas needs more revolving doors, less screen doors!
