Indian Mangoes In Dallas?

Wow, lots of Indian food e-mails today. After I finished my last post, I opened an e-mail with an attachment to Sandip Roy talking about Indian mangoes.  They’ve been banned from the U.S. for twenty years, but now some varieties are being exported. A co-worker spotted them at “his local Indian grocer” for $20 a box. He’s not in right now, but I asked him for the name of the store and how many were in the box. Considering I paid over $5.00 for 4 Gala apples at Albertson’s, $20 for 6 or 8 mangoes sounds like a bargain. Not the best I’ve ever had, but still a bargain.

The grocer was at the corner of whitlock and denton drive in Carrollton. This was about a month ago, but I’m wondering if they’re now out of season per: http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/05/10/travel/10mumbailetter.html

I think it was something like 10 to a box. Could have been upwards of $25 though.

You might try HMart in Carrollton (Corner of GBT and Old Denton Road). They’ve got a lot of Indian and South Asian produce and the prices are really low.

Central Market has mangos for 79 cents this week. Had a ripe one yesterday. It was so delicious–tasted like it was crossed with a coconut.
