Report From East Texas: 25th Annual Tomato Festival in Jacksonville, Texas

Your brain after one hour at Tomato Festival.

Saturday, Jennifer Chininis and I headed to Jacksonville for the annual Tomato Festival. We landed at noon. It was 96 degrees and the humidity hovered around 65%. There was not a cloud in the sky. People were melting. All of the food was fried. There was no beer. We stayed long enough to almost faint—one hour and fifteen minutes. Here is a photo essay of the event. No beer!!!! Why did you stay that long?

Nancy, seeing that you reside in this neck of the woods, would think you would have no trouble figuring out what a “tornado tater” is….it’s a redneck contraption that utilizes a drill, clamp and potato (not kidding) to make twisty fries/chips. The potato usually comes out in one long curly string and is then deep-fried. See ‘em at the State Fair too. YUMMY with lots of ketchup!

BTW – “redneck” was meant in the nicest way…I count myself among them (from Kilgore, just a hop, skip and jump up the road).
