We haven’t done one in a while, so here we go:
Tonight I’m meeting a friend, who is in the same broke boat, for dinner and I wanted to see if there were any deals (outside of the Early Bird specials offered by cafeterias).
I know the Libertine does half price food nights on Sundays and Meridian Room entrees are half price on Wednesday nights, but I ‘m not sure about other places and thought the Side Dish nation might be able to help.
I know State and Allen Lounge does half-price pizza on Monday nights. Other ideas are appreciated.
Tonight at 9 pm. Food Network. Guy Fieri. Jason Boso. Tivo.
Last week I called out to restaurants to let us know if they are tweeting specials. (Did I just write that?) Anywhoo, a few responded. Here are some new Tweeteries for your twittertainment: @kavalachef, @ZENSUSHI, canerosso,twitter.com, campania, twitter.com, meringuebakery, @LazareDallas. Don’t forget us: DSideDish.
While I’m sure many of you aren’t into Twitter, we’ve been twittering for about a month or so over on SideDish, and I think it’s pretty fun. I love reading tweets from people like F&W‘s Dana Cowin, Gail Simmons and Kate Krader, Gourmet‘s Ruth Reichl, all the folks at EaterNY, and local chefs Blythe Beck and Kent Rathbun. It’s just another way for me to get information and learn what’s going on out there.
Anyway, enough about us. The New York Times has an interesting article on recipe twittering. Basically, there’s a woman in Northern Ireland who only tweets recipes. She finds it a challenge to see if she can condense them into 140 characters or less. Here is one example:
Strudel Pastry: cut 2T butter/1c flour/mash tater. Knead w 2t yeast/2T h2o; rise 1h. On flour cloth gently pull 17×25″; trim-1″/butter well.
and another:
Kashgar Noodles: mix3.5c flour/2egg/t salt; knead+12T h2o. Cut4; roll30x10cm/12×4″. Cut crosswise cm/.5″. Cvr30m.Pinch+stretch dbl. Boil6m.
Find her at twitter.com/cookbook, for those of you who are into it.
Well, we knew it wouldn’t be long before Dallas’ newest royal couple hit Laura’s favorite haunt, The Mercury. Remember when she tried to snatch Mercury’s Execuchef Chris Ward and install him in the White House? The former president and wife showed up on Friday night. According to the restaurant’s PR lass, Andrea Alcorn, Mr. Bush stopped by one table and asked, “May I take your order?” (WHY could that not happen to me? I would have happily placed an order.)
Anywhooo, Chef/Partner Chris Ward put on a culinary show: crabmeat tacos, homemade cous cous, Dover sole, salmon, and four varieties of souffles for dessert. AA sez Laura Bush “gave Ward a kiss on the cheek for a job well done.” President Bush told Ward, “it is nice that we moved close to you; we will make The Mercury our regular spot.” As former President Bush was walking out, he stopped by another table and asked, “How was your dinner tonight?”

Listen up all you mother lovers, Mother’s Day is coming up soon. May 10. Mark it down and make reservations. I have updated the list.
Who in the Sam Hill is the local snitch for the Food Network? Our area chefs can’t buy a James Beard Award but national reality TV shows love to take them for free. Last night poor Bronwell Webber was iced from Last Cake Standing but tomorrow, or more specifically May 11, will be another day to cheer for another familiar face. Chef Barbara Renfro of Jamaica Gates Caribbean Cuisine in Arlington will appear on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. They’re hosting a watch party which will double as a birthday bash for Chef Renfro. There will be live reggae music. Bronwen Weber is bringing a cake and Leslie Brenner is bringing grouper. Yummy, I love fish. Okay, so Webber and Brenner won’t be there, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rocksteady from 4 pm to 11 pm with the locals. I know Teresa Gubbins will be there. She shot the sheriff.
