i think it’s pretty good as is.
Jimbo@ April 9th, 2009 at 10:42 am
more snark, especially from Nancy
Jimbo@ April 9th, 2009 at 10:48 am
ohh…and we need to organize a cage match between Tim and Leslie Brenner.
Nancy could be the announcer…but it’d require emphasis on phrases like “Leslie Brenner braises Rogers like a sweet slab of pork belly” or “Leslie Brenner whisks Uber-metro Man into a foam.”
'roundtownJohn@ April 9th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Maybe a quick reference panel to the hottest topics or buzz restaurants/reviews over to the Side (pun intended), then we don’t have to scroll down fo-evah…
Long Live the ‘Dish!

Less “help this poor _____ out”
Tom@ April 9th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Fewer reports from your food junkets to Milan and other far-off ports of call and more local reviews and info.
ER@ April 9th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
I second the idea of losing the help this poor fool out. I’m sort of tired of it. Everything else is great. It’s a wonderful place to get industry news.
Luniz, that makes no sense. Tell me what you mean by interesting?
TLS@ April 9th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
I think SideDish is pretty darn good the way it is. I have to agree that the “let’s help the incapable of googling” posts have got to go. Especially when the helpless never report back on what they did and how it went!
I really have enjoyed the informative posts from Amy S. and would like to read more inside info from her and others in the business.
And food fights and gossip are always gold. Carry on!
Jennifer@ April 9th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I second Tom. D stands for Dallas, not Dubai, Djibouti or Devonshire. I don’t care who from D is eating what in LA or Italy or wherever. D is a local mag, and I really want it to focus on local food. I can and do read about restaurants around the world in Food & Wine, etc., but D is my source for local food news, and in the end, it’s the local scene that’s the most important one to us, your readers.
luniz@ April 9th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
less gossip. more food. keep gossip directly related to the industry, not whether people have gambling or drug habits. less celebrity c***.
and the stuff from paris or italy or where really don’t interest me that much either.
James@ April 9th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
More of that Squinty Watch persson. That s**ts funny as hell.
ex-intern@ April 9th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
I disagree; I enjoy hearing about restaurants in Paris, Italy or wherever. Although tax season has set me back a little, I do plan to visit these cities and now I have a reference of the best places to go.
Also, I would like to see more Dallas restaurant reviews and specials on the site. I need to know the best places to spend my money!
Marci@ April 9th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
more local reviews …maybe some chef interviews (we have a lot of great ones in dallas ya know!) maybe to get people more “involved” have some of the readers of the blog contribute their reviews.
City Girl@ April 9th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
I like this blog! I agree with the posters that asked for less “help this person out” stuff and less outside of Dallas reviews. I love reviews and news.
JHS@ April 9th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Just going to chime in and place my vote for Tom’s post and against ex-intern’s post.
I would also like to see some crossover coverage to other counties/cities that comprise the DFW metroplex.
Hell, just watched Food Network’s Diner, Drive-Ins and Dive and saw something on a restaurant in Watauga within a Conoco Gas station. Chef’s Point Cafe
So guess where I’m heading this weekend to check this place out. It would be nice to see a better range of coverage too. Eating at fancy-schmancy restaurants is less and less feasible in the current economy.
I want to hear about the place inside of the grocery store (Taj Imports or Zituna/Tangiers) or the gem at the gas station!
texaskatey@ April 9th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
I actually get some interesting ideas from the “help this poor so and so…”
I would also love to see a feature on BYOB restaurants. In the current economy, they can be a great way to economize without sacrificing drinking quality.
cookingfresh@ April 10th, 2009 at 12:11 am
I love all the gossip, esp. when it turns out true. I would like to see more energy spent on small independent restaurants. Local and on the edges of Dallas. Help everyone find the good ones. More pieces on cutting edge chef’s that are using greener ways and renewable resources as well as sustainable food supplies. More on the American Table.
A BYOB story is a marvelous idea. Lists have been floating around places like Chowhound for years, but I can’t remember if it’s been tackled by local media recently.
luniz@ April 10th, 2009 at 9:18 am
JHS have you had the pani puri at Taj Mahal? If not, just go to the back, stand to the left in front of the little metal counter @ the corner and ask the lady for a medium pani puri!
luniz@ April 10th, 2009 at 9:20 am
your reporting of the sous vide stuff a while ago was good. Maybe an investigative type report of who’s really using mostly local sources/ingredients?
kat g@ April 10th, 2009 at 10:39 am
I agree with texaskatey, I get ideas from “help this poor…” as well. I learn about places I didn’t know about before.
I like hearing about far away places, but maybe do it in a round-up as opposed to several posts.
Maybe feature a Thursday or Friday Happy Hour special to get the weekend started. Kind of like Adam’s old Friday Fun on the Frontburner blog.
Glenn Campbell@ April 10th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
less posts from abroad. less shilling by eveans.
Bad_Ike@ April 11th, 2009 at 3:04 am
no stuff from abroad? So you DON’T want assurance that the people who influence your eating decisions have traveled and experienced other viewpoints of food, to have sampled authenticity, to have glimpsed the root cultures of our melting pot (pun intended)? And this is supposed to be the blog of the foodies of means, who can afford to rise above the throng in taste and discernment? The asininity of such statements and the insular thinking that belie it explains why slop-shop ego monuments are hits in this town while those helmed by real cooks suffer. Sad.
Arden@ April 11th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
I LOVE the help a poor ___ out – please, please don’t take that away. I can speak for me and probably 10 of my friends who have found shower venues, date night spots and great places to dine with out of towners. There is no other website with such great referrals (and i dn’t count Chowhound b/c i hate how their site is set up – not user friendly to me). I would say only lessen the “when in france stuff” that’s nice and all but those of us working stiffs only need one photo and restaurant review – stick to the goings on in Big D. That’s my two sense -back to you, luniz…
went2kansas@ April 12th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I (obviously) like the “help this gal out” etc. I actually went to several places recently in Kansas City that were suggested on this blog. I also like to hear about cooking events and any food related events. I second “arden”’s comments – I have passed on venues and used a caterer that I found on this site. (and was extremely happy with it all!)
went2kansas@ April 12th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I forgot my favorite-I attended the cooking class that Nancy suggested at Central Market that was taught by the Tuscan chef…. my all time favorite class! I am working on getting a group to go to her weeklong class in Italy next year. I would NEVER have known about it except for this blog….
mytwocents@ April 12th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
Wow, Ike, that boulder on your shoulder must cause you back problems. You or your friends have obviously been at the helm of some failed establishments to be angry enough to call the rest of us “asinine.” I’m sure you’re loads of fun to have around.
At any rate, I too, am tired of the posts from around the world. It’s borderline offensive to be jaunting off to the four corners of the world when so many of us are struggling to pay our bills, much less trek off on a food adventure in Europe (especially when D itself is cutting staff). If you must continue with this stuff, I like the earlier suggestion of doing a one post round-up. On the other hand, I think a BYOB feature would be fantastic! I’d also like to see recipes from local chefs or that use local ingredients since I’m eating at home much more these days. Thanks.
Bobby Ewing@ April 13th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
1. Occasional dispatches from abroad/trips inside the U.S. are fine. I got great New Orleans recommendations here and it’s a short trip. Likewise even if not going to Belgium or Italy it can be inspiring…but perhaps it’s a link to the longer pics/story as opposed to multiple front page reports.
2. More hidden gems inside or even in the burbs. Perhaps “great dinner dates for $40″ or “Why you should drive to Ponder.”
3. I don’t mind “help this poor soul”–if I want to read the comments on a topic that’s interesting to me or contribute that’s what I will do. It doesnt dominate space and throwing out a thread is part of what makes this format interesting.
4. More “first look” and sneak peek/taste stories of anticipated places.
Not Another Failed Bit, Please!!!@ April 14th, 2009 at 8:34 am

luniz@ April 14th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
oh and my number 1 suggestion…get rid of people trying to be clever in the name field..
allison@ April 15th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Maybe a happy medium for the above folks & have just a day of “help this poor person.” Or a single question. Whatever. But only one day- a la Glenn Mitchell.
SideDish is a food-related discussion among editors at D Magazine about the Dallas-Fort Worth dining scene -- everything from good meals to bad service, kitchen gossip to restaurant news, chefs’ secrets to culinary trends. Bon appetit.
i think it’s pretty good as is.

Steal some stuff from eater.com
I like their reservation feed, deal feed, plywood report, shutter report, first look inside pics of new places, etc.
Maybe some liveblogging during Top Chef, Next Food Network Star, Last Restaurant Standing, etc.
A few videos – nothing fancy or overproduced…shoot it yourself and edit it on imovie – fun to see some places in action.
more stuff that’s interesting. less that’s not. more people that know what good food tastes like. less that don’t.
Luniz, that makes no sense. Tell me what you mean by interesting?
