Thanks to another eagle-eyed Disher for his report.
I wanted to make sure you knew that the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” program aired an episode last night titled “Family Favorites” that included local watering hole/good food paradise Louie’s. The show Web site doesn’t mention Louie’s, but instead includes a Fort Worth restaurant that I don’t think was included in the program that aired last night (I only caught the Louie’s segment).
The piece on Louie’s, which was the final segment in the show, focused on their pizzas, the “Don” sandwich (homemade steak burger smothered in onions and jalapenos with a slice of cheese and one piece of bacon sandwiched between rye bread), and the soon-to-be-famous mulligatawny soup, an Indian dish, heavy on the lamb, that the crew at Louie’s was inspired to make after the infamous “Soup Nazi” episode of Seinfeld. Louie Canalakes and his brother Chris, the head chef, were featured prominently in interviews with the show’s host, Guy Fieri.
I wasn’t at the bar last night, but I know they were watching, apparently along with everyone else since I couldn’t get through on the phone last night and got a call from my mom in Kentucky this morning who said she saw the show and is packing her bags for a trip to Dallas so she can try the food at Louie’s for herself.
And that’s the name of that tune.
UPDATE: PegNews reports Watauga’s Chef Point Cafe will appear on April 6th episode of DDD.

I saw the episdoe last night… Good to see some of the DFW restaurants finally starting to air. I think Guy was impressed with Louie’s! He loved the pizza and the Don sandwich! And a good looking group of customers- I thought they all did Dallas proud!
We were in Louie’s Saturday evening when a kid at an adjacent table asked the waitress about the show, she said it was airing last night. I looked up the episode guide on the FN website (which is the worst website on Al Gore’s interweb) and could not confirm that Louie’s was on either episode last night, so I didn’t email NN. As Jason stated, it was nice to see a Dallas restaurant on the show and hopefully our next two entries show as well.
yep. saw it. not bad.
still waiting for the avila’s, etc. episode to air later this summer…
Louie’s has had the best pizza and among the strongest drinks since I was in law school (Class of ‘87). We regret we can no longer watch Hansen leaving the bar to go do the 10:00 sportscast. One of the best not kept secrets in East Dallas. Sad they no longer serve Old Style.
They did Louie’s proud. But am I the only one who find’s Guy’s trademark chowing down while standing in the middle of a live food-prep/kitchen to be just gross?
Louie’s is overrated.
Louie’s pizza is obviously awesome but few know that the other items on the menu are equally as good – including the desserts that Louie’s mom makes.
Glenn Campbell can suck it.
this post made me hungry. louie’s is the greatest pizza on the planet in my humble opinion. love that place! sad i missed the story on food network, hope it airs again.
Overrated? What’choo talkin’ ’bout Rinestone Cowboy! Pizza, steaks, cheese burgers, blackened shrimp, salmon…it’s all great!
Two words: sauteed oysters. That. Just. HAPPENED.
Good call!
I saw the episode as well! I have to admit, I’ve driven by Louie’s and never knew what the heck it was but I hear they have strong drinks and the super thin pizza looked amazing. I’m headed there this weekend. Do they have happy hour?
@Nina: Every hour at Louie’s is happy.
Smells like the shill is on.
Nina, there are no food or drink specials if that’s what you mean.
Overrated…..do you expect a media hangout to be judged fairly? As Jerry would say,”I’m smiling when I say that”.
Neither Party can also suck it. Enjoy your dinner at Mi Cocina. Or Macaroni Grill. Whichever is tonight, I can’t remember.
Did nit Glenn Campbell plead guilty to extreme drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident and get sentenced to 10 nights in jail.
“I wasn’t really that drunk,” he told syndicated entertainment TV show “Access Hollywood” in an interview. “I was just over-served.”‘ Perhaps AT LOUIES!!!!!!!
Campbell also said he didn’t remember anything because he was “in a blackout mode.”
Count Louie’s as the one and only Dallas restaurant that threw us out. It was years ago and we weren’t too thrilled with our service and auto-grat (party of 10). Pizza was great but not as great as the service was bad. Maybe its time for another try judging by the lovefest on this blog.
Louie’s one of our favorite places – hit it at least 3 times a month. Show did it justice – just hate the publicity — now we’ll have to wait longer for a table.
Wow. They need to work on their signage. I could drive by that place twice and NEVER know it was there.
