Metro Diner in Preston Center Will Close August 23

Or 24th. Nobody knows for sure, but the popular breakfast spot of Parkie champions is closing by the end of August. Loads of regulars are upset. One of them, Shannon Shelmire Wynne, who has been eating there since his Civil War days, is taking action. He will now open his Flying Fish, located a few doors down from Metro Diner, for breakfast. “We’ll have it all,” he says by Blackberry while driving his Prius. “Pancakes, waffles, whatever they served we’ll have.” Hey, Shannon, I’m in Matagorda and just came back from crabbing. We’ve got six Texas blue crabs here. How do I clean these things? Later, gators.

Mini Review: Olenjack’s Grille

Good food. Bad service. Hmm…what wins out in the end? This past weekend we went to Olenjack’s Grille in Arlington to celebrate my future mother-in-law’s birthday. I was asked to pick a new restaurant for the family to try and I remembered relatively good things about Olenjack’s. The first time I stopped in was shortly after they opened and my thoughts were that the menu was inventive, if not a little random, and the dishes I tried were quite good. The only real complaint I had was that it seemed like the servers just didn’t care. I shrugged it off as opening jitters and figured that with a little time to work out the kinks, this independent restaurant could become a gem in Arlington. Apparently, I was mistaken. I’ll warn you that things get a little ugly after the jump…

Nonna Recognized In Bon Appetit Magazine

We love Nonna restaurant for several reasons, including: Great food, close to our house, and hotness of chef Julian Barsotti. Seems the editors at Bon Appetit magazine have noticed the restaurant’s greatness as well. The magazine’s September issue is all about Italian food, and they name Nonna as one of their favorite spots in the country, and they give the recipe for Barsotti’s Taglierini with Bay Scallops and Meyer Lemon. Read all about it here, and congrats to the restaurant–this is a well deserved honor.

John Tesar Eats and Blogs At the Same Time

I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, but chef John Tesar, from the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek restaurant, is not in the kitchen this week. Nope, he’s left things in the hands of his extremely competent staff while he goes on his annual inspiration trip through Europe. Luckily for us, he’s got his laptop with him and he’s blogging on the go. Right now, he’s eating his way through Paris. Read, and prepare to be jealous.

Disher Review #8: Nobu

This Disher deserves a gold star. This is his second Restaurant Week review! And it’s a good one. Jump for it.
