Lobster Bisque at Fearing’s: Getcha Some

So I just got back from a business lunch at Fearing’s–fancy, I know–and I had to tell the world about the fabulously decadent lobster coconut bisque, which, according to Dean Fearing, is giving his signature tortilla soup a run for its money. To be honest, I should have just stopped there. Who needs an entrée when your “starter” is so ridiculously rich and filling? I absolutely adored the Asian twist, down to the crunch of the sizzling rice and lobster wonton–kinda like the cherry on top. I may need a nap, but my dreams will be sweet.

You better order something or they will run you out of there. After dropping well over $1000 on a dinner, we were unceremoniously informed we had to vacate the table within seconds after finishing dessert and before those of us who ordered coffee could even finish it (refill? you don’t need no stinkin’ refill!). I haven’t been back since — not that Deano really cares.

OMG, that is horrible. They told you to leave? WRONG.

WTF, who (besides^) serves bisque in August in Texas?

Hey JS, you’re not alone. The same thing happened to us at Sushi Sake, and we were told that they needed the table, even before we finished our entrees. Never been back since.

They began hovering around the table as dessert was served. As soon as the plates were cleared, one of the staffers came up to me, said that they needed the table, and offered to find us someplace to sit in the Rattlesnake Lounge. As I mentioned, several people had not finished their coffees. The bum’s rush actually was present throughout dinner — while one guest had her head turned talking to the person next to her, the staff actually cleared her plate without asking and with about 1/3 of the food left on it. I should say that this dinner was not overly lengthy — I have spent much longer at Abacus and other restaurants and was never asked to leave.

Not that I’m trying to defend Fearing’s or anything, but I’ve had eaten there twice in the past month, and have had hours-long leisurely dinners with no rush from the waitstaff.

I will agree about the lobster bisque–it is very delicious! Although it’s more like a thai coconut curry than a bisque. Perhaps that’s why it’s appropriate for the summer.

Although I heard so-so reviews for Fearing’s, I’ve had wonderful experiences with both the food and service. The sommlier, Paul, I believe, is especially friendly and helpful, and can help you find some great wines even if you have a limited budget.

    Thanks, Dean!
