OK, full disclosure–it’s me. I am going to Atlanta and need some tips on where to eat. Not fancy so much as good. OK, stay away from jalapenos today and think for me. Varsity, I know. (Thanks Elizabeth Lavin for the picture. You’re a Georgia peach.)
Kent Rathbun’s brother Kevin has two restaurants which have both gotten lots of accolades.

we went to this great 1940’s kinda place (think jazz music and subtle decor) I reallllly enjoyed it. The food was excellent….they have a great mushroom crusted pork chop and a filet medallion trio that was yuuuummmmy…
What about top chef finalist Richard Blais’ new joint? I think it’s named Home.

The Vortex Bar & Grill Peachtree is supposedly THE PLACE to get burgers in the Hotlanta-area. The atmosphere however might require some bravery… http://www.thevortexbarandgrill.com/
First:Where are staying? Location may determine accessiblity. Second: Business or otherise? Are you a guest or are you soloing?
Here are the latest ATL must do’s:
HOLEMAN & FINCH ,a southern influenced gastropub that was just named best new resto by Atlanta Magazine. On Peach in S.Buckhead.

STAR PROVISIONS. Lunch/takeoutspot for foodinistas from Anne Quatrano and company(BACCHANALIA). West midtown
JCT. in the same ‘hood as STAR. Casual, upscale southern classics done well with a great bar with a superior view of the ATL skyline.

I lived there for 7 years – my favorites:
Georgia Grille – the absolute best Southerwestern food, tucked away in the corner of a nondescript strip mall. Get a Dan’s margarita.
Fritti – great pizza
Horseradish Grill – wonderful upscale Southern cooking
Flying Biscuit – the best breakfast in town! I wake up every Sat wishing there was one in Dallas….
Poodle@ July 29th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
place called Dogwood Restaurant (565 Peachtree Street, Downtown dogwoodrestaurant.com) opens tomorrow. i think it sounds delish.

Just got back from ATL. If you are in mid-town, 2 places worth checking out:
1. Flying Biscuit (great breakfast, try the oatmeal pancakes) and
2. South Side Grill (nouveau southern cuisine- decent prices)
Home- awesome food and cool atmosphere.
I, too, would visit Kevin Rathbun’s “Rathbun’s” or “Rathbun Steak,” but I would also give Top Chef runner-up Richard Blais a visit at “Home.”
Since Richard didn’t win the big money, I suspect you’ll still find that celeb chef in the kitchen.
Dang, Kelly scooped me while I was inserting all those quotes!
If you’re in the mood for pizza, I’d recommend Fellini’s:

There are a few locations throughout the city. The one on Ponce was my favorite when I lived there.
I’ve been to Rathbun’s and Grog Bar many times and even though I know he’s great – those aren’t nearly as good as Abacus and Jaspers.
NEO is a new, chic contemporary Italian restaurant in The Mansion on Peachtree. It’s a great scene and has gotten fab reviews.
Nancy,
Best organic breakfast in a cool place:
R Thomas
http://www.rthomasdeluxegrill.com/
It’s on the left side of Peachtree a couple blocks north of the I-85 & Peachtree Amtrak station.
Also, I second the flying biscuit (the one at Piedmont & 10th which I believe is the original).
