Central Market Issues Precautionary Recall of Fresh Jalapeno Peppers

Pepper lovers, there is no need to panic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning asking consumers to avoid eating raw jalapeno peppers or foods made from raw jalapenos to prevent additional cases of Salmonella illnesses. The recall by Central Market and all HEB stores is voluntary. No local illnesses have been reported. I’ve talked to several Mexican food restaurant operators in town who have secured USDA-approved sources for their jalapenos–if you are wary, ask where the peppers came from before you dip into a pile of pico de gallo. This recall is for FRESH jalapenos only–canned, cooked, and pickled jalapenos are safe.
