Once upon a time in a faraway land, a friend and I were sitting on the beach talking about an idea for a restaurant. We were tossing around a concept called The Last Supper where the specials would be the last meal requested by a famous prisoner on death row. Like “The Ted Bundy” or “The Charles Manson.” Of course this was eons before the Internet–even computers. (Sometimes I do miss my military green IBM Selectric.) My remembrance of that conversation came back to me yesterday after I heard an interview on KERA (Hi, Jeff!). The reporter interviewed an inspired and irreverent restaurateur in Beirut who opened a war-themed eatery called Buns and Guns that features Terrorist Cuisine. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before there is one in Plano (Hi, Trey!). But back to the last supper idea.
I’m sure most of you savvy readers are aware of this (warning: highly addictive) website, even I, the ultimate techno-slug, have been reading it for years. But I hadn’t checked it out for a while and last night I took a brief refresher tour. What is up with fried chicken? (And A-1 sauce?) Does KFC need to put a Surgeon General’s message on every bucket: Warning, consuming fried chicken may cause an increased desire to rape and murder? Would fried chicken be on your last plate of food? Or are you more of a “coke the van” man? Hmm, this is really a serious question when you think about it. If you could choose your last supper, what would it be? I’m going to post mine later. I want to be really precise.
Until six months ago, I was probably the only SideDish reader in Beirut. Sad I cannot contribute.
Welcome home, but we still have one!
Rare herbal crusted prime rib. Red onions, summer tomatoes w/fresh basil and rare pungent blue cheese wedge crumbles. Fried eggplant sticks (corn meal) w/roumalade (Cajun). Fried apricot pies. Served with herbal iced tea and fresh mint with lime wedges.
An all you can eat buffet and a feather to tickle the throat with.
You all might already be familiar with this:

BWF, yes I know the book, but I “love” the image of a criminal in his cell with a box of fried chicken, a bottle of A-1, 16 Pepsi’s, and ten bags of Fig Newtons. The other is too glitzy.
Mesquite smoked brisket (but any of the TM top 5 will do), fried okra, a side of bar-b-qued shrimp from Pasquale’s Manale in New Orleans, and some pecan pie from the Bluebonnet cafe.
long time ago there was a website that listed all the final meals for the folks down in Huntsville. Then they were forced to take it down as being too cruel and unusual. I’ll have to see if managed a screen print at that time
now this is one big last meal

PK, of course I remember that. I’m a prison voyeur. DON: You rock–Pasquale’s Manale BBQ shrimp oh, I have to add that to mine list. Is that fair or can I just have some of yours. Do you think they have wet ones in prison? OH NO, can of worms.
I would just eat everything I love until I blow up so the good food kills me before they can.
Darn you, N2. This is a question I’ve been meaning to post on our blog. Love this subject. Just for today, here’s my answer:
– Maryland jumbo lump crab salad with blood orange and avocado
– A thali of South Indian curries, mostly vegetables and seafood, like served here: (http://www.rasarestaurants.com/UserPages/menu_resraurants/restaurant_n16.htm)
– A modest plate of Ed Mitchell’s barbecue (http://www.newsobserver.com/lifestyles/food_fitness/story/926361.html). A plate of barbecue from City Market in Luling would substitute nicely.
– A small dish of blood orange sorbet
– A big bowl of peach crisp (with vanilla-bean brown butter poured over the fruit) with vanilla-bourbon ice cream melting atop. Then, curtains.
Freckle Face
There you are. I will join you for the big bowl of peach crisp with vanilla-bean brown butter poured over the fruit, but let’s flame it.
Is that really Bill Addison?
Having traveled in 64 countries, lived in 8 foreign countries, been to 46 of the 50 states in the USA and eaten in all of these locations usually on expenses, Pasqual’s Manale’s Bar-B-Que Shrimp is my absolute favorite dish. I would always order it for my last meal. I have tried to duplicate it but it never seems to come out as good as they do it at Pasquale’s Manale.
