A Taste of Taste of Dallas

I am working on print product stuff today and did not have time to escape my humble cube to check out Taste of Dallas. I dispatched two interns, Abby Holekamp and Paige Nobles, to do the dirty work for me. Their report is after the jump.

Update: Taste of Dallas runs all weekend and has some great concerts as well as food. Check the link above for times and schedules.

Even though it was hot out (surprise, surprise), and even though we showed up during that awkward period of day when it’s a too late to call it lunch and waaay too early to call it dinner, there were a lot of other like-minded individuals enjoying Taste of Dallas this afternoon. After being handed free chips and salsa from La Costeña’s booth and accosted by Clay Pit, an Indian restaurant, entreating us to try their cheesecake, our first stop was Kuai for Asian dumplings.

We tried both pork and chicken (pork won), and they were not only crispy and satisfying, but a really good deal—four for $3. They come with your choice of spicy or sweet ginger soy sauce. Noting with irony the Tilt-a-Whirl located next to Kuai, we went back to take the guy at Clay Pit up on the mango cheesecake. It was average, but the fact that it was served cold made it delicious on a hot day.

We found more relief from the heat as we passed the Dick’s Last Resort’s booth and were unexpectedly shot at with a water gun. Luckily the Brawny paper towel man showed up and handed us a highly absorbent paper towel to sample. Perfect timing.

Now that Dick’s had gotten the party started, what better time to sample a New Orleans classic? Even on a steamy day, we just couldn’t resist a bowl of jambalaya. RJ’s Crustacean of New Orelans did it just right for $3.

Of course we couldn’t leave a Texas food tasting without sampling some Tex-Mex, thank you, Super Tacaso. They were offering a variety of taco fillings with a choice of corn or flour tortillas. The tacos were a little pricey in comparison, at $3 each, but the chicken ones we had were delicious, with cilantro, onions, and a fresh lime wedge.

Overall, it seemed like there was something for everybody: we spotted lots of Tex-Mex and barbecue, of course, but also plenty of Thai, Indian, and even Brazilian. Good ol’ TGI Friday’s was in attendance, natch.
