Three weekends ago I went to Austin with some girlfriends. On the way home, we were desperately searching for bagels (?), but since we were getting hungrier and hungrier (re: grumpier) with each passing mile, we gave up the search stopped at Rudy’s instead.
At this point I’m sure many barbeque enthusiasts are shaking their heads. I know, there were about 100 other places we could have gone that a) weren’t chains and b) were tastier and c) weren’t located in gas stations. But the situation was desperate, and hey–it wasn’t bad. Elizabeth ordered the brisket, and we literally had to force her to stop eating it so she wouldn’t get sick. I had turkey and potato salad (pictured here). The turkey was very thinly sliced and smoky, and I happily ate it between the slices of white bread they outfitted us with (I also stuffed plenty of pickles in the sandwich of course). Potato salad and coleslaw were fine, and although I’d like to try a different place next time, it was really quite fine.
Okay, let loose. I probably deserve it.
That’s funny! We went to Austin last weekend too and stopped at a Rudy’s too! Yes, we were hesitant about eating in a gas station. Yes, it is a chain. But Rudy does come from a great family of BBQ people, so they know their BBQ.
Plus, they had some mighty cold beer in there too!
I had the chopped sammy and potato salad. Boyfriend had sausage, beans and sliced brisket.
Next time, make the detour through Taylor, TX and stop at Louie Mueuller’s (see link.) They are awesome and well worth the side trip. But go early in the day… before they run out. Don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
Good for you! I hate food snobs.
(I hate any snobs for that matter! :^)
Glad you enjoyed it.
Looks like a fun place!
I’ve eaten at a few of the places in the recent Texas Monthly devoted to the best BBQ, and I have to say, I still love Rudy’s in addition to many of those chosen. It’s not everyday that I make it out to Kreuz Market in Lockhart, but I always stop at the Rudy’s in Waco on the way back from Austin (don’t eat at the one in Austin because I’m constantly eating at Maudies while I’m there). I even went all the way to the Rudy’s in Denton to get some meat for a TX/OU tailgate at the Cotton Bowl. Name a better place in Dallas for BBQ and I’ll think about changing my mind…
My fav in Dallas is Peggy Sue’s.
We had bbq this weekend at party from someplace else and it was just not as good to me. Some things too dry, some without flavor and some too darn fatty.
But that is just my opinion.
Peggy Sue’s doesn’t do it for me. I think their location has a little bit to do with their success, because I’ve had better at a gas station Rudy’s.
uh, you do know there’s a Rudy’s across from the Frisco Soccer Complex, right?
Rudy’s BBQ
9828 Dallas Parkway, Frisco
Sonny Bryan’s on Inwood near Harry Hines, you have to get there early also before the meat is all gone. The one on Lovers Lane is not as good, my opinion. It is hard to duplicate a really good restaurant!
We went to Rudy’s in Frisco this weekend. A relative who lives up there suggested we go there for dinner. In Frisco, it has a slightly slick chain-y feeling to its casual charm. We really liked the lean brisket, but the bread, corn, baked potatoes and sauce are nothing special. And the service was painfully inefficient. I think any Sonny Bryans or Spring Creek BBQ is better. I also don’t understand why Peggy Sue’s gets such high mark. I had their shredded beef with sides (beans, coleslaw) at a catered party and was not impressed.
Sure, Louis Muellers and Coopers are better. But they are down in Central Texas. And Rudys is up here. They are solid (they smoke over oak). Sarah, don’t pay the snobs any mind. If they complain too much, tell them to put their money where their mouth is and BUILD a better BBQ restaurant here in North Texas!!!
There’s a bagel shop on the west side of 35 between Parmer and Yaeger next to some new hotel(fyi). Rudy’s is good consistant slightly better than average(for central TX) ‘que. M*’s recommendation for LM’s in Taylor is good, but a more convenient recommendation is Schoeph’s in Belton. The concept is Cooper’s-esque with meat off the pit on entry and mesquite smoking…but way better than what Cooper’s Llano has become.
Rudy’s is good and they aren’t all located in gas stations, wish there was one closer than Frisco.
