ASPEN, COLORADO–I took this picture of Jeffrey Yarbrough and (must watch this link) Joshua Wesson last night at the party, but I just came back from Josh’s “How Low Can You Go” wine seminar. As usual, Joshua proved to be a brilliant sommelier, educator, and comedian. I’ve learned so much from this guy over the years, and this morning’s tasting was no different. Perhaps we should jump.
Wesson’s big deal is simple: “Pleasure and price point are indirectly related.”
His view on why people drink wine: “For taste. It makes the people sitting around us funny. It increases your chances for having sex.”
His goal for the seminar: a blind tasting of six wines. We were given sheet and were told to a) sip the wine and guess the price point b) guess the grape c) name where it came from d) name the wine. The wines ranged from $10 to $60.
The idea was to point out how many of us see the price on a bottle of wine and assume that the more it costs the better it tastes. We were to go with what our tongue tells us. So I guess you want to know how I did? I got 4 of the six price points dead on. Impressed? Me too. But here is the humbling part of the drill: my guess for wine #1 was an Italian Prosecco for $15. It was a Tattinger La Francaise Brut NV that sells for $50. And the #6 wine I tagged as a $60 port from Spain when in fact it was Trevor Jones Jonesy Tawny Port NV from Australia that sells for $10. Gotta go, I’m late for my next class.
that Jeffrey Yarborough is one sexy beast!
