Last night I ran the Katy Trail 5K. It was fine, good race, etc. The real reason this run is so popular is the abundance of local restaurants that have booths set up in Reverchon Park, post-race. Jump if you want a (limited) recap.
The beer lines were somewhat outrageous (Michelob Ultra is a name sponsor), so we opted for the sparser queue at the Barefoot Wines tent. Sure, Shiraz after a run is not exactly thirst-quenching, but the pours were healthy and we switched to Chard later on. I overheard one of the reps say that Barefoot is the largest landowner in California. Huh. Anyway, Wild About Harry’s was serving up samples of frozen custard (chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and Dreamsicle). Salum was giving away delicious looking fresh fruit popsicles. Tiff’s Treats had lots o’ cookies. Strong’s sliced up some tasty ribs. Greenz had tiny cups of some kind of feta and onion-spiked salad. Chili’s offered boneless buffalo wings complete with tiny celery sticks. The Crescent gave out homemade granola bars. There was pasta salad courtesy of Holy Ravioli. Grimadli’s had bruschetta and cannoli (bring pizza next year, please). Alo was slathering corn on the cob with what looked like mayo and Parmesan. There were pulled pork sliders and chicken salad sandwiches from—I actually forget now. The takeaway: there was a lot of good grub, mainly from local haunts. I highly recommend that even if you have no desire to run, walk, or even crawl 3.1 miles that you sign up to go to the post-party. It’s well worth the investment, and it’s for a good cause. The race shirt’s not half-bad, either.
