While it may not look like much, this was the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. Could have been the altitude, but most likely the 4.2 (nearly vertical) miles I had just hiked to the highest point in Texas. More after the jump.
This past weekend I took a road trip with some friends to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. For those not familiar, it’s wayyy out on I-20 and then North a few hours. You’ll end up right on the border of New Mexico, on the same formation that makes up Carlsbad Caverns. It’s home to the highest peak in Texas, the Guadalupe Peak, at 8,749′ (that has a weird stainless steel pyramid at the top, placed by AA in ‘58.)
We hiked 4.2 miles, climbing around 3,000′ to reach the top (and then 4.2 back down). This was after doing a 7.6 mile hike through an adjacent canyon the day before. While Cliff bars will do the job, peppered turkey, fresh avocado, mushrooms, greens, and just a touch of S&P on white bread taste a bit better. And yes, my legs still hurt.
