Rise: A Preview

rise.jpgOh. My. God. I just came back from a V-Day lunch at Rise in Inwood Village. Talk about sin on a plate(s). First of all, thanks to Mark Maguire, Hedda Dowd, and chef Cherif Brahmi for introducing a truly unique restaurant concept (souffle bistro) to Dallas. May you bloom and grow faster than my belly. The interior is smashingly fun, the food—lobster Thermidor soufflé, salad nicoise, and apricot soufflé—is rich and delicious, and the wine list is casual and sophisticated. Warning: it’s a mosh pit. Go early, late, or round up seven for a reservation. Report back. (5360 W. Lovers Lane, Suite 220. The old Lovers Egg Roll space. 214-366-9900.) Burp.

We really liked it to. We went for lunch on Saturday and Hedda was there supervising! The nicoise was sublime with beautifully seared tuna. The wine list was extensive and reasonably priced…lots of good things by the glass as well. I had a foie gras souffle which was remarkable…beware the prices of the foie gras and thermidor specials as they are each $30!! The desserts are wonderful as well. The decor is remarkably good…very expensive finish out. As you note, if you go in peak hours, not only will you wait for a table but the food comes out slowly…that’s OK however as i mentioned, the wine list is great.

I was supposed to try Rise on Sunday, and I was so excited…but friends who arrived earlier than I did said the wait was an hour. This was at 11–and that’s when they open! Apparently everyone had the same idea. Seems like the wait would have been worth it! Maybe next Sunday.

Disappointing. They were out of at least two of the dishes we tried to order. The cassis souffle was very bland and uninteresting but the bread pudding version was very good and we liked the cheeses. Our overly chatty waitress had a voice that sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard. Overall a C+

Order off the menu…Hedda won’t tell you but rumor has it that there is a succulent squirrel souffle (whisper you want the Huckabee Honeypot) that is simply to die for. Pairs well with a Lambrusco.
