My Lunch

Today I met a friend for lunch at The Fish in the West Village (next to Cork wine bar, just down from the newly opened Grimaldi’s. Has anyone been there yet? I’m dying to go. They’re not open for lunch, FYI). Anyway, I’ve only heard good things about this new place…but I thought it was pretty average. First of all, my friend and I were the only two people there the entire time (noon to one). This always makes me feel self-conscious. I drank about 17 glasses of iced tea because we were getting so much attention from the server. Secondly, I ordered yellowtail nigiri, and the fish definitely wasn’t that fresh. It wasn’t spoiled, but there was an unwelcome fishy aftertaste that I’ve never experienced before, and the texture was grainy. The salmon sashimi I ordered was beautifully presented on a bed of crushed ice, but the salmon still had pieces of the skin left on it. I’ve seen this before, and I always wonder if this happens as a result of less-than-perfect knife skills, a dull knife, or a combination of the two? Maybe SideDishers can help here. The miso soup and edamame were both fine (tough to mess up either) and the atmosphere seems like it would work at night (tall red banquettes, black leather booths, lots of outdoor seating). Maybe it’s just not a lunch place. Good service though.

On a sidenote: The bathrooms are so neat. The ladies room had a huge red settee in it, chandeliers that hang over the sinks, and elegant automatic faucets (who would’ve thought) that you don’t have to wave your hand in front of like a crazy person to get to turn on. Does anyone else have Fish experiences to share?

    I went for dinner about 3 weeks ago…my friend and I both thought that it was very average (less than average, really). It was pretty empty the night we went too. You order nigiri by the single piece, which is different.

    I too was there 3 or 4 weeks ago for dinner. I was totally underwhelmed by both the food, and the service. Based on the waiters recomendation we started with a ribeye roll that he assured us would be excellent. It was not, the beef was so tough, you could not eat it without the whole thing falling apart. The rolls were nothing special, and constructed poorly, and the sushi (tuna) really didnt taste like anything.

    I had a big group for my birthday. I really like this place. I had the seared kobi beef. It comes raw and you sear it at the table on a hot stone….yum! I’m a big fan all of our sushi was great with beautiful presentations. Try it again at night, It’s pretty good.

    I went a little before Christmas and it was ok. I haven’t been back. Our waiter also recommended the ribeye roll. It was good but not a must have or anything. The place was nearly empty (it was an early week night) but our waiter was no where to be found. Overall, I would say that place was average. I don’t know that I would recommend it over others in town.

    It’s two steps from my apartment and I love sushi. And yet, I still haven’t found the motivation to try this place. To me, the decor is 5-10 years behind and trying too hard. The prices are high.

    Perhaps my feelings were tainted by the persistent sewage smells during the lengthy construction of their grease trap.

    And no, it’s never crowded when I walk by. Low sales volume can’t be good for freshness.

    I went a few weeks ago and was a little disappointed. The rolls are tiny and over priced for what you get. There’s a lot better sushi in town.
